I have two Nikon cameras with wi-fi capabilities. One is a d5300 with wi-if built in. The other is a d7100 with the wu-1a wi-fi adapter. I have used the Nikon WMU app to transfer photos to both an iPad and an iPhone. It works fine. However, I want to transfer photos from the camera to my Mac laptop. Apparently Nikon doesn't provide a way to do this. I found an open source program called dslr dashboard but it will not run on my laptop. Have any of you had experience with transferring photos from camera to computer using wi-fi? I have no problem using a usb cable or a card reader.

My MacBook Air has an SD slot, I just use that.

I use the SD slot on my MacBook Pro and IMac to transfer the images.

I do now, and have always used Eye Fi Wireless cards for all of my transfers. I detest pulling a card to transfer an image. If I were transferring hundreds or thousands at a time, then I'd pull the card but not for the way I shoot; 50 shots or less at a time.

I use Eye-Fi cards, although my cameras have Wi-Fi capability.

Maybe this will help -

The big difference between WiFi and direct transfer will be speed. For a few files, no big deal. For the hundreds I take after a day of sports - wayyyyy too slow! Lightroom does most of that work for me! Best of luck.

I use the cable quite a bit on my d7200. I keep the cord permanently plugged into a USB bar on my desk so I can just plug and go without removing the card. Just as fast as direct card transfer from what I can tell.

Yep. The Nikon software does not support the direct transfer of files from he camera to a computer via wi-fi. Sigh. So You're stuck with a cable, or simply plugging the sd card, into the computer. Both are faster than wi-fi especially for larger file transfers.

A round-about way to do it is transfer the files to the iPhone or iPad then of course they will be on the iCloud and you can export them from Photos. But what a mess and I have not tried that for NEFs.

There are other solutions as mentioned, like the Eye-fi card.

I do not know about the D5300, but Nikon has software for the D7100 that allows you to directly down load to you laptop. I do iy all the time.
Go to nikonusa.com and go to downloads to find it. I would bet they have it for your other camera

Please provide the exact name of the software you are referring to and state what type of computer system are you using.

Thank you.

I have a macbook pro. I do not remember the specific title of the software, but it was listed for the D7100 in the Nikon software download files. Once you find it you give the download command and it goes into your computer. Then you must open it from your computer to install it.

Pardon me but I'm skeptical. I'm not going on a snipe hunt for software I don't believe exists when you can't even provide the name of it. I mean how hard is it to get the name? You simply open it and it says "SOFTWARE NAME". So, not trying to be mean, but if what you say is true you can help a few Hogs, by giving us the name (and version) of the software.

My guess: Nikon Capture-D, Nikon View-Nxi, or Nikon Transfer. I MUCH prefer LR to all of those! All are free from Nikon!

It's called a Wireless Transmitter Utility. Found in the download section of the Nikon website.
