Gessman, I have indeed done some shooting on the Colorado National Monument. Lots of interesting rock formations and canyons. I think it would be best in early morning light, I've tried it at sunset and there's just too many shadows. It's right on the western edge of Grand Junction. If you come this direction on I-70, it's about a five minute drive from the Fruita exit. Actually, I love the drive on I-70, there are so many great places to get off and take some photos. Anytime I drive to Denver it always takes me at least two hours longer than it should because I have to stop at every rest area in Glenwood Canyon and burn through a memory card.

And, I agree, this is something of a solitary persuit in practice, but I sure do enjoy gabbing about it after the fact.

Thanks for the info on the monument. You're really in a prime jumping off spot where you are, Moab just down the way, Arches, Bryce, and then Monument Valley all within a fairly short drive. You're really lucky. Of course, I guess you can only do that so much, eh?

And, yep, talking is good. I've noticed, there's not as many forum members in this region for the concentration of photographers here in Colorado. It may catch on later. I guess we'll see. Maybe they're a little more like me than I am at this point, quiet and solitary. :-) I didn't think you were ever going to say anything at all. You're coming around some, huh?

You've got me started and now I won't shut up :!: :!: :!:

And you're right, this is an amazing place for photography-it's almost overwhelming. So many choices.......

Yes, that's Grand Junction in all it's glory

Liz, maybe we could meet up and take some pics together and learn from each other. I've always wanted to shoot the older buildings up by you. And of course there is always the trees too!

At last count, yours would be the 4,973,565,741st shot of the mill and by golly, it's about as nice a one as I've seen. The lake is a little more obscure but equally as nice to gaze upon. You do good work. Lovely.

Gessman, are you among the 4,973,565,741 (hee, hee)? I know it's been done to death, but I just had to try it! Thank you for your kind words, sir.

That is the wonderful thing about photogtaphy, there are 4,973,565,741 different pictures of the same mill and maybe 41 of them have a truly unique angle, its all good. What matters is that the photographer is proud of his or her own work, and remember, there are far more people who have never seen a picture of the mill before (including myself) so for them this may as well be the only picture of the mill in existance and its a good one!

Thank you so much for all the nice comments! If you google Crystal City Colorado you can see all the other 4,973,565,741 others that Gessman is referring to  . I'm looking forward to seeing these cryptic Tabernacle photos that Gessman mentioned.

Comparing both photos. I agree the top should be cropped. But I feel the boulders should stay - it ceates a very rugged ambiance. But then, I like boulders.

Cryptic isn't the right word. I asked gessman to make me a challenge using a wide angle lens so he said shoot a whisky bottle with the spires of the LDS Temple in the background. I thought it would make a great contrast of idiologies and so I agreed to do it. Now all I have to do is find the time to get to Salt Lake City with my props and equipment and sprawl myself on the sidwalk with my camera. :? :-P

Ah, I can't think of a better test of a wide angle lens than the LDS Temple. The whisky bottle is an interesting juxtaposition, hope you don't get in trouble

Me too seeing that I am devout LDS. The challenge for me it to make a scene of starkly oposing ideas. The caption could read "Everybody Worships Something". Beside, I will not be on the Temple Grounds when I take the shot, I will probably be on the sidewalk across the street somewhere. If you want to see some of the work I have already done with the Temple check me out on Flickr http://www.flickr.com/photos/cityshogun/sets/72157626838015994/

I checked out your photos on Flickr-gorgeous! The Temple is an incredibly striking building and gardens are beautiful. I especially like the night shot, is it HDR? It's very well framed and not over done.

Yes, there are two of the Temple and two of the new conference center done in HDR. HDR is not for everything but when it does work (which is quite often provided it is done correctly) it works very well. Oh, and thank you for the compliment, I do love photography.

Cropping is the only thing I see little off the botton.the ribboning effect around the rocks is very cool. From other shots of the mill, that is one ugly tree on the right to work around.most of the shots were more straight on the building.(so they could leave it out and still have a boarder on the right. love the tone and the ribbon. The second one,is that flare or campfire smoke,it look like people standing at the base of it. What do I know, i'm flashy, trashy point and shooter.

The Crystal City Mill is one of the most photographed places in Colorado. It is difficult to get a really good picture of it since it sits in a narrow canyon-it doesn't get good dawn or sunset light. I took this photo on a very overcast day, so I tried to frame it without much sky. Lizard Lake is a small lake on the way to Crystal City, I liked the reflections, so I took a shot. Anyway, I would love some feedback on composition, exposure, etc. Both shots were taken with a Canon T1i with Canon EF 17-85mm F4-5.6 lens.

P.S. It was never actually a mill, it was something of a power plant to produce compressed air to run mining equipment.

The first photograph of the mill is superb. I have seen many photographs of this but this is without the finest of the lot. You must have gone to a lot of trouble to get the positioning exactly right.
congratulations.
