Combining images?

I'm wondering if I can combine 3 files into one image and make it look how I want. I have tried in PSE 12 (layers) and Picasa (collage) and can't figure it out. What I'm looking to do is move 3 scans of my passport and credit cards (front and back) and make it one image so I don't waste paper. I'm beginning to think it would be better to just print the files, cut them out, rearrange them on the scanner and make the new print.

You don't even have to use layers. Just copy the first image, and place it on a new document. You will have to resize it to fit everything on the page. Go to the next scanned image and copy that, resize and paste it. When you are done you should have everything on one page. NOW THE CHALLENGE. Are you trying to place too many things on one page? Will you be able to read the information? I would suggest doing the passport on one page and the credit cards on another. Keeping them both in different places. If you lose the one page that is combined, the person finding it will certainly have hit the jackpot! Hope this helps.

You do not even need layers for this. Just open a >new<(empty) file (at the size you want it to be). then open all 3 scans at once and move them into the new file and arrange them as you see fit.

If I indicated you just want three 'files' or 'scan's as indicated by a couple of users create a new document then open the three others, use Ctrl-A (to select the whole image) then use Ctrl-c (to copy the selection). Select the blank document, Use ctrl-V to paste the selection you made earlier. Resize and position at will (layers would work best - Create transparent layer). Repeat the process twice with the other two documents. You have your basic document. If you used layers you can move the images around, change the order, whatever. Note that can only downsize as these are pixel layers and resizing up will create pixelisation*.

-----
* Best bet is to link the images to the document instead of C&P as when you resize up or down you do not have pixelisation and can modify any of the three images and have the changes 'live' onto your composite document. (This linking may not be a feature of PSE....)

I gave up before you replied (with nice detailed instructions) and just made a couple new scans - one with passport and credit card fronts, printed and put the print back on the scanner with the CC backs appropriately positioned...worked fine. Funny thing, when I entered a triptich in a weekly challenge post it worked automatically in about 3 seconds. I need to take a regular semester PS course. i can never remember all those cntl commands.

You've already received good advice here. Just curious, you aren't doing this for some scammer in Nigeria, are you?

I'm a little skeptical of anyone wanting to scan passport and credit cards together.

Yeah, not a good idea, IMHO.

I'm traveling overseas (leaving Thursday) and want to have a copy here at home with family and another copy with me or in the hotel(s) in case I get mugged or whatever.

First off, I hope you have a great trip and have no need whatsoever of your backup plan. Personally, I would think one-picture-per-page would give much better detail in the event that such images are required (again, I sincerely hope not), but this is, of course, your project.

In any event, if it comes up again, you have received some excellent instruction in how to proceed.

Hope you have a great trip and come back with some excellent pictures

Thanks :) I'm going on a 15-day tour (Overseas Adventure Travel) of the Holy Land and will be spending my birthday there (3 yrs ago it was Alaska for my 50th). I try to make it special every once in a while, but it's been about 15 yrs since I've been overseas (Germany - another birthday). About 4 or 5 yrs ago I went to Honduras with my church on a mission trip...pretty much a life-changing experience. My pastor is leading a trip with a different tour company (Educational Opportunities), actually leaving on my birthday, but just going for a week. I would have loved to go, but his tour is going to be 80-100 people, mine is going to be 16 (including me), no single supplement (saving me hundreds), and I booked my trip last April. I'll have my relatively new used bridge camera (FZ-200) with me due to baggage restrictions and 132 GB worth of memory cards so plenty of pics and videos won't be a problem! Still watching videos, though, and it has more features and sub sub-menus than I ever imagined! I never even used everything on my Sony.

With a scanner, place your cards and documents to fit the page, scan, and print. I carry duplicates of my driver license, credit cards, medical insurance cards, passport with me in case the originals get lost or stolen. Also copy all of your prescriptions and medical conditions for back up. It is a good idea to scan both sides of your credit cards which have the phone numbers you may need to get approval or report a stolen card. Most credit cards will stop accepting for large purchases away from home. That happened at a hotel registration in Las Vegas, and when purchasing a bed spread in Hawaii. Call your credit card company and tell them of your travel plans and dates ahead of time. Very important to have this information kept separately. I lost my wallet while traveling, then called the police in the town where we had dinner. They found it and we drove back the next day and retrieved it by showing my duplicates.

May I add, Rick Steves and other travel specialists recommend making copies of your passport and keeping the copies in a safe place. If you lose it or it's stolen, the American embassy can help you get a quick replacement and border controls can flag it as stolen.
