Hey guys I picked up a Nikon 75-300mm real cheap and it takes great pics.It will only fire at the largest aperture f32. camera says "lock aperture ring at minimum aperture f/number". Anyone have experience with this lens? Any input would be appreciated. I am shooting with a D3200. Thanks
Hi Royce, I have this lens and I love it. Most reviews rate it better than the old 70-300. Since it's so heavy I use it on a tri-pod.
Enjoy.
Jim

What!??? Is this a REALLY old (broken) film lens? That is actually the smallest aperture (larger number). No, you don't want f/32 unless you want to experience diffraction. Sure f/32 will give you massive Depth of Field, but that does not make for a sharp or high resolution image or even artistic one. Most people generally want soft backgrounds if the subject is in the mid-ground. Either you are using the lens wrong or it is broken. Actually I believe there are limitations on older lens model use on Nikon D3xxx series cameras vs. D5xxx & D7xxx ones. Though I thought that was with Autofocus. Does this lens have a yoke on top, i.e., for an ancient F or F2 camera?

set lens to f32 and select f stop with command dials on camera

There is usually a slide lock to keep the (f/32) 'SMALLEST' aperture set.

f/32 is the smallest aperture. It might be the largest number, but it is the smallest size of aperture.
Digital cameras have aperture control mechanisms in the body of the camera.
Setting f/32 on the lens allows the camera to control aperture.
In aperture or manual mode, you set it using controls on the camera.
In shutter or program, the camera is able to set the aperture.
Those lenses have to be locked at the smallest aperture. That is f/32. There should be a locking tab somewhere near the aperture ring on the lens. The camera holds the lens wide open until you shoot, then it stops the lens down to the aperture indicated by the meter. Most cameras and all Nikons work this way, regardless of the type of lens you are using unless it is an old non-AI lens, which will not fit on your camera.

The AF Nikkor 75-300 f/4.5-5.6 is about 9 years older than the AF Nikkor D 70-300 f/4.0-5.6, and at 850 g is not very heavy at all.
Thanks Old your reply is what I need will check it out

It may not autofocus with your D3200. It will only do so if it is an AF-S lens with focusing motor in the lens. Lenses without the focusing motors require a camera with a focusing motor; i.e. D7xxx or higher in Nikon lineup. Look at the designation on the lens.
You have been given proper advice on locking aperture on the lens so the camera can control it.
If the minimum lens opening is f32 and the manufacturer suggests to keep the lens there it does not mean we are shooting at f32 all the time. It simply means that the camera will work automatically better with the lens set to that opening. For a variable aperture lens setting that lens to its minimum f stop the lens will honor for all focal lengths the aperture set as long as it is not set at the largest aperture where the aperture will vary at different focal lengths.
Yea I knew that. Rather manual focus anyway. The question has already been answered.
Perfect answer thank you.
