Hello everyone. I want to tether my Canon DSLR to my Lap top / Computer so that as I am taking Studio Portraits the shots will automatically up load to the Computer, and the shots will be able to be seen as I shoot them. Do I need any specialised equipment??
Thanks All

It will be on your Eos Utility Disc supplied with the camera. Be mindful that the images will be downloaded to your laptop and not to the camera card.

This feature is built into Lightroom. Here is how I did it at AdobeMax:

Specialized equipment? Maybe, maybe not. Are you wanting to tether wirelessly or by USB connection?
If wirelessly, is your camera capable of a wireless connection on it's own or will you have to purchase an adapter for it. Also, do you have access to a wireless network in your studio?

USB could be much easier in that you should be able to use the cable that came with your camera to download pictures to your computer. You want to buy a USB extender cable if the supplied camera cable is too short for your set-up(they usually are). I would recommend trying to stay with an extender no more than 10-12 feet long. I have had trouble trying to use longer cables.

The EOS utility program that comes with Canon cameras is fine for monitoring and adjusting live view settings - connected with USB cable. There are some additional functions that are not available in camera.

Yes there is a simple solution that I use in the studio. It is called CamRanger. It is a wifi unit. I suggest that you use an ipad with it, as it is programed to work with your camera to make all necessary adjustments. http://camranger.com/
Another benefit for using this device is that you can adjust lighting while holding your ipad in live view.

I also recommend the CamRanger. I don't do portrait work, but use it as a wireless tether to my iPad or smartphone when shooting where my camera position makes camera operation cumbersome or awkward (macros, ground level or high elevation camera position).

If I am correct, the makers have added the capability to tether to two iPads simultainiously so your client can also view images without your needing to walk across the room to show them. Your iPad can be set to allow camera adjustments if you want, while the client's can be set for viewing only.

I think that for the studio photographer the CamRanger can be a valuable and versitile piece of hardware well worth it's cost.

You are correct, CamRanger has an upgrade APP so you can use 2 iPads.

ControlMyCannon and for the dark side (me) ControlMy Nikon. It is like $29, if i remember and it is a really good program for the price. also allows you to do Focus stacking. Well the capture. You will then have to use PS or some other process to merge. I use CMN for Green Screen photobooths. I have a workflow that goes from SNAP to Print on my DNS40 in 6 seconds for engagements.

I use Capture One Pro, it allows you to view and focus, plus all your other camera functions as well. You can also do your raw editing there too.

Looks interesting at the outset, until you earn that ControlMyNikon is Windows only and will not tether to or communicate with an iPad.

I'll pass.

Actually, if you look, the OP'r was asking Cannon to LAPTOP. The suggestion was for them. So the laptop could be Win, Mac or Linux. 2 out of three would support this. I don't use Mac. It is a toy.

No need to be an ass. My remark was intended for those who might consider ControlMyNikon for use with a tablet. It will NOT work with same, and if you'll bother to investigate the software's website, you'll see that it is Windows-only. Hence, it's of no use to me, as I don't use software that functions only with Windows. If I chose to do so, however, I could still use my Mac, as it will run Windows OS. Your Windows-only computer will not run Mac OS.

Now, I could make a snide remark about your choice of gear, but that would serve only to make me appear as childish as do you.

You do realize you replied to my comment, right? You did not start it off with 'To anyone that cares'. "I" was replying to your DIRECT comment to me or did you not notice you quoted me. Next time if you want to get this idea across, just go down to the bottom of the page and type in that big, white open space and do not hit 'quote reply'. Also your inference was that because it does not work with a tablet it is rather useless. I am in the Enterprise Software Business, have been for 40+ years, none of our software's run on Mac. Simply because we, as well as the rest of the professional business community, classify them as toys for college kids. They are useful for what they are but their computing power and expansion capabilities are very limited. I am just giving you facts you may be unaware of. I did it without name calling.

Something like Adobe Lightroom and definitely Canon EOS Utility. The latter came with your Canon. Updates are available from Canon's web site.
