I want to purchase the Nikon 55-200 DX VR II lens for my Nikon D3300 Camera. Looking for any fellow Hedgehogs that may have experience and advice about this lens. I recently purchased my D3300 with the 18-55 DX VR II kit lens.
I realize it is not the "Top Choice", but I have limited funds to purchase a decent Telephoto lens for my interest in Landscape and Nature Photography. Your honest opinions please. Thanks.

Be more concerned with learning to use the equipment and don't worry about what others may think about it.

I have purchased two used lenses from B & H camera. I am completely satisfied with their performance. My walk around lens is a Nikon 18-140 for just around 235.00. About half price I believe, used but looks brand new. Good luck.

Well, I am a photographer who likes surfing and Carnival non posed shots. So I need zoom either because the subject is far from me like surfers or because I do not want to be seen in the scene so I can take spontaneous shots. I started with a 18-105mm VRII. Then I exchanged it for a 18-200, and finally I found myself comfortable with a 70-300mm. In your case, IMHO, I'd try a more general use lens like a refur 18-200mm. In this post, someone already said that exchanging lens may be somehow cumbersome... at near future you will probably find what your main photo intetests are and then will invest in more expensive and dedicated glasses...

I have some experience with the 55-200 nikon. For me it is very nice little lens. As others have stated is a plastic fantastic, but for most of us it is fine. It is reasonably sharp and a good addition to the 18-55. That being said I sold mine as I found an 18-270 tamron to replace both of them with. Very happy with it. But the nikon kit lenses are not slouches either. The 3300 is a remarkable little camera...I am happy with mine.

I have the 55 - 300 and it is not used that much by me. I also have the 18 - 140 which stays on my D3300. I will soon get a Tamron 16 - 300 to use as a travel lens so I don't have to change lenses.

I have the 55-300 f4.5-5.6 VR ED kit lens that came with my D5500. I like the quality of the lens and the pixs. I also have a Tamron 2x converter I use for the extra reach.

Honestly the 55-200mm is not as good a lens as the Nikon 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED AF-S DX Nikkor VR II Lens for $50.00 more.

I got my D5200 with the 18-55 and 55-300 lenses and also like Landscape and Nature photography. What I ended up finding was that although the 2 lenses covered the focal length gamut from 18-300mm, I was spending A LOT of time switching lenses to go between wide angle and close-ups. I foresee that in your future as well if you go with the 55-200. I eventually solved the problem by picking up an 18-140mm lens which has basically retired my 18-55. This allows me a good combination of wide angle and zoom when I want it without all the fumbling, and the 55-300 when I really need the reach. Nikon also makes an 18-200 zoom which seemed the best of all worlds, but it was more expensive than the 18-140 and on several reviews the 18-140 got higher IQ (Image Quality) ratings.
I got my D5200 with the 18-55 and 55-300 lenses an... (show quote)

I did exactly the same thing. When I purchased my D5100 from Costco it came with an 18-55mm lens and a 55-300mm lens. After couple of years, I bought the 18-140mm and use it about 80% of the time.

By the way, I despise the term "kit lens." That term seems to convey that the lens is inferior. That is simply not true. Any lens that Nikon packages with a camera is a kit lens. The lenses that are referred to as "kit lenses" use less expensive manufacturing techniques, are are generally not as rugged as the "pro" lenses. That does not mean they are optically inferior.

Should you opt for a 70-300 VR I would sell mine and replace it with a 200-500. it is an excellent lens

I downloaded a free app onto my iPad that's called, appropriately, "Nikon Lenses." The app lists all Nikon lenses and reviews of them. I use it all the time and find it really handy. It's also available for an iPhone.

One additional point about the difference between the 55 -200 and the 55 - 300 is that the 55 - 300 has a metal mount vs. the plastic mount in the 55 - 200.

Yeh, and those metal mounts are tough. When I dropped my D800E, the lens snapped off but left its metal mount in the camera. Unfortunately, in so doing it warped the camera's mount. Everything has the potential to include a tradeoff.
