DIY Squirrel guard and Suet/Oriole feeder

I got tired of watching the squirrels eat the oranges put out for the Oriole. So today I threw this together. Now lets see if the Oriole finds the orange halfs in the old Suet feeder.

I had this old garden stand where the foot step had rusted off leaving just the 3/8 inch straight pole. I drilled a hole in center bottom of an old olastic planter and slid it up the pole upside down. A couple of 3/8 inch cable clamps around the pole on the inside and outside of the planter bottom stabilizes the planter. So far they have not figured out how to get over and up to the oranges and the squirrels sure have been trying. I put seed on the top of the planter for the chickadees and bluejays and it drives the squirrels crazy :)

Wonderful idea. Keep us informed if these crafty fellows figure it out.

Good idea and a good photo but don't be surprised if you look out in the morning and see the rascals on top of the planter

Good idea, thanks for posting. I will be assembling something here as I have spotted the first Oriole of the spring. In one of my black squirrel shots, it shows 4 swollen tics on its back. Looks like another banner year for tics.

I think squirrels are the smartest animal around. I gave up trying out smart them. Now I just feed them I go through a large bag of peanuts every two weeks. They are fun to watch.

Neat photo and idea.

I was watching Discovery channel the other night and a fella had problems with squirrels to. He tried many different things to keep them from his feeders. He put a down spout over the post and the squirrels were unable to climb it. If they figure out how to get around the pot, give this a try.

Right on!!!

Probably works better than my system. 18 lb Jack Russell mix named Tara. She sometimes has to sleep, is real loud when she goes after the squirrel and I have to feed her. But we have had her since she was only 2 lbs and about 11 weeks old. Since I was already retired she would sleep in my lap or walk up to my shoulder and curl up by my ear while I watched TV or read. Now she stretches out next to me in the lounge chair and we do "snoz and newz". She does snoz, I do newz, unless it is boring then it becomes snoz and snoz. Toby the Shin Zhu mix comes over and props himself up to have his head scratched then sleeps under the table by the chair.

Squirrels are ingenious little folk. Don't be surprised if they figure out how to move the buddah on the bench so they can climb on top and launch themselves on to the upside-down planter. And if they DO succeed, you'll have to document it and send it to U-tube.

Cousin Rocky says he will come help them solve the problem. He isn't sure if Bullwinkle can come for the heavy lifting.

Thanks everyone, so far it is working just fine. I have not seen them walking on the yard on each others shoulders to get over the top but one never knows. My next project is to try a 24 inch long piece of 7 inch stove pipe and cap which I picked up at the store today. Some online have had success with that and I think if I can cut the cap I can overcome the stands where there not just a single pole at the bottom to slide through a hole. A project for another day.
