Sad. Be of interest to hear how they think it started and why they waited until it got out of hand.

They didn't wait but the hot, dry conditions and strong winds prevented them from stopping it. This is a very remote area and it's difficult to get crews into it quickly.

Definitely! I'm surrounded by woods, and I don't like to see smoke in the hills. We've had a couple of fires lately, but they were brought under control in a day or two.

The area where it's at is very remote as mentioned before and this year it is unseasonably warm and dry. The winds have been strong further fueling the fires. Thanks go out to the Mexicans and Australians for sending men to help.

My understanding is that the fire is still far from being under control despite the vast number of people on the ground and aircraft fighting it ... last I heard they were mostly focusing on protecting people and assets, and that without some significant rainfall it will be very hard to actually control this.

A lot of people here in Calgary have friends or relatives that live/work up there and so far it sounds like everybody is making it out safely. What remains to be seen is how much of the city is left when it is all over, and how long it will take to rebuild. Last count I heard was 1600+ structures destroyed with some neighbourhoods completely wiped out.

Now they're saying they expect to be fighting this fire in one way or another for months unless they get some significant rain. Only nature is able to put this one out.

This morning there was a radio report of a lady and small child that had to drive through flames to escape. Her husband was on a business trip so not available to help. One remark was that it was fortunate that the car was a diesel and not gas for the flames she had to drive through were so intense that the car might have exploded. The report ended with a note that the weather pattern was such that no rain was expected for at least a week.

600 square miles burning, water is now undrinkable, it's spreading into Saskatchewan, no rain forecasted thus far. Amazing no lives have been lost. This could last for days on end.
