I would like to get some pictures of local trains without setting along the tracks for hours. How do I find out when a train is scheduled to pass a point?

Hope you get an answer, been wondering the same thing. Passenger trains are pretty easy since schedules are published, but we have freight lines a few miles away and can't find any info.

Check out railroadradio.net. It takes some figuring out but you can hear the schedules sometimes. Hope this helps!

The next time you see one make a note of the day and time. Fright trains usually run on a set schedule, I think. Here we have a coal train that runes through town Monday through Friday at the same time twice every day.
BTW they are limited to “half a stick” per trip so as not to tie up traffic too much. A “stick” is 100 cars.

Passenger train schedules are available online. As for freight trains, they have no schedule (according to a TV documentary). They run where and when they want. We have a freight line running through town, and they pass through at all different times. A couple of years ago, there was a bit of trouble when the crew insisted on stopping at the local Dunkin Donuts. There was nothing wrong with the crew members, but leaving the train blocking the RR crossing messed up the traffic flow in town. You can't just tow a long freight train out of the way.

Train Wrecks few.
Reason Clear.
Fireman never

Do you operate any heavy machinery?

Find a model train club in your area. In the club will undoubtedly be
photographers. They will know the schedule of freight drags through the area, and the best place to photograph from. Our biggest problem is RR's enforcing No Trespassing and the local police enforcing Homeland Security rules. Why would you want a picture
of a train, you must be a terrorist.
Find the hobby or train store in the region and they will know the clubs.

No. I'm retired. I just drove a lot in my past life. Why?

It struck me as funny the Burma Shave thing you made up, then saying how it was running through your head, and that often happens. It reminded me of warnings on medications not to operate heavy machinery. No offense. It just struck me as funny.

We have a coffee shop/TCBY yogurt place just a few feet from the tracks. I've often sat by the window eating a sundae and counting cars. The track splits a little ways ahead, and if the train is bearing left, it moves at a snail's pace. That's not good for the cars waiting for the gates to go up.

Can't you just call your local rail yard and ask?
We have a train that goes along the creek behind our house morning between 9:30 and 10:00, and then returns every evening at 5:30-6:00pm.
So I know the schedule, but can you call and ask on that day when a train will be going by?
Wouldn't hurt to try.
Good luck :)
