I am pretty sure I read good things about this camera here recently, but I tried to search the archives and can't find it. It is on sale at Costco now and may be such a good deal that I "have to" have one. Please tell me again how good it is... (or not!) : ) Thanks!

I have one and I find it be very good for a travel zoom. I especially like that it has a EVF (electronic viewfinder). The EVF is great in bright light when the LCD screen is hard to see. It's also good for when you shoot at long telephoto focal lengths or in low light because it is more stable holding the camera to your eye than holding it out in front of you.

I have the previous model (ZS-40), and it is fabulous. Whenever I travel or for almost any around home shoot I go on, I take camera and whatever lens seems best for the occasion, and then have the ZS-40 right in my pocket covering from 24 to 720 mm for all shots outside of whatever lens I took. I therefore have pretty much all shots covered, without carrying multiple lenses and switching.

Photo quality is excellent for such a small camera, and it shoots raw and has a viewfinder allowing more stable holding of the camera.

I would assume the 50 is as good.

I have had a ZS50 for 9 months, and I have found it to be an excellent camera. On Intellegent Auto it seemed to miss focus from time to time, but I set up center point focus on "P" and that helps a lot. Default noise filter is very strong, smoothing out a lot of detail, but I shoot RAW + Jpeg so I can apply the noise filter as needed, and this helps. Elements 12 does not support the ZS50, so I have to go through a converter, but such is life.

I also have the ZS 40 and second the recommendation above. I use it both for travel and for previewing landscape locations before using my DSLR. It's very pocketable, good build quality, raw capability, has wifi and gps, a usable viewfinder, excellent image stabilization, many shooting modes, and a sharp lens for this type of camera with good zoom range. If the ZS 50 is as good or better it must be great. Mine was a Costco close out deal at a great price after the ZS 40 was discontinued. I think you would be happy with the ZS 50.

I have owned several versions of this camera, from the TZ5 to the ZS40
models. I only take pictures on trips and the ZS40 with the viewfinder,
long zoom, and compact size makes it a perfect travel camera for me.
I think that the Panasonic cameras are often overlooked with the Canon,
Nikon, Pentax, and Sony zeal.

If the name Panasonic is on the camera, it is good, regardless of size, type etc.

I'm still wrapping my mind around that idea -- have always thought of Canon, Nikon, Minolta, etc.

I too have the ZS40 and agree with the comments of the other owners above.
I have read great reviews of the ZS50 which support the view that its as good or better than the ZS40.

I have the ZS40; a great little pocket camera. For all of the reasons cited by respondents to your post, BUY It, and don't leave home without it!!

I had the DS Z 40, and loved it for hunting, and casual carry. I dropped it in sand once which effected the zoom. I sent it to Panasonic to be fixed ($130.00). In the mean time I bought the DS Z50 because I couldn't stand to be without my little camera. I love this camera, and did have to upgrade to PSE 13 to handle RAW.

I was easily able to sell the Z40 for the cost of repair.
