I would agree with the Panasonic LX 100 with its Leica lens mentioned previously. In addition I would add that Panasonic and Olympus both have great interchangeable lens 4/3s with the added benefit of a large selection of lenses as they are interchangeable between both brands.

I read an article recently that pointed out that while the camera bodies are smaller for Sony mirrorless, the lenses are larger, so there's no significant overall reduction in weight or size.

One of the reasons I've stuck with m4/3...lenses are smaller, especially the primes.

Many thanks to everyone for all of your helpful comments!! I've been pondering a 4/3 camera for ages but have not yet been able to make any decision. However, after my recent "heavy camera kit" travels, I'm very motivated to do some shopping. I very much appreciate all of your informed suggestions!!

If interested in M4/3, please do yourself a favor and check out BobbyTan's work on Fred Miranda - so you understand what the format is capable of. Good luck on your new journey.

http://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1127925/351 - in fact that whole thread is M4/3

I am an avid traveler and, after my last journey, I am suffering from easy to carry camera and lens envy. I have been traveling with my Nikon D810, a wide angle lens, a general lens, and a telephoto lens but my kit ends up being pretty heavy. I am addicted to the excellent image quality but would love to hear your ideas about shooting with a mirrorless camera for travel. Any suggestions? One close friend told me to forget about using Sony?

Please see my ad for a Fuji X100T currently running in the UHH Members Buy/Sell/Trade Classified Section. Price has been reduced for an exceptional deal on a great travel camera.

Have a look at the relatively new Olympus Pen-F (micro four-thirds). Its a beautifully made camera with great image quality. Its fast and light with some interesting new features - a real pleasure to use!

I have been using M43 for several years now and would never go back to a DSLR.
M43 cameras are quite compact, very light and produce excellent images.
I have two Olympus cameras, an EPL-5 and an EM10, one camera has a Panasonic prime 25mm lens and the other has a Panasonic 14-45mm zoom.
Both of these cameras fit into a small camera bag and can be carried about all day long without any effort.
Panasonic and Olympus both produce very good cameras and the lenses are interchangeable, I suggest you research these models and go ahead you won't regret it.

The Oly Pen-F is great; so is the Pany GX8. Wonderful cameras that link you into great systems.

After you finish your search for a camera, begin a search for a new friend, someone who knows something about photography..

I don't know why you were told to forget about Sony. My suggestion is to make a list of everything you want in a camera and then check them all out to see which one comes the closest. As for me, a year ago, I bought a Sony a6000 as a light back up for my full frame Nikon. Then my Nikon took a back seat. Last week I sold my Nikon and lenses and bought a full frame Sony. Yes battery life sucks. But that is the only negative I can think of. There are soooooo many positives to the Sony. BUT the best camera out there is the one that works for you and you alone. So make that list, be honest with yourself, and see which one works for you. That's the one you will be happy with and use a lot.
