We are going in a few months, and wanted to know if anyone has been, and could give me any photography advice! Where was your favorite place to shoot, what, if anything, should I know in advance?

Never been there myself, but I have a friend who is originally from Turkey
and returns there quit often with his wife (neither are photographers). He has said many times: women should not go out by themselves. Be careful as Turkey is not the same country it was a few years ago.

I made my comment because of an American woman who went to Turkey by herself a couple of years ago after her friend begged off. She ended up dead. You may remember the story.

Hi Cyn, lucky you. My wife and I spent October in Turkey and it was unbelievable. We only spent 4 days in Cappadocia and could have easily stayed longer. The first thing I would be sure to do is a balloon ride. I got great photos from the ground every morning but those from the balloon cannot be duplicated any other way. It all happens at first light so some of the earliest photos are some version of night shooting and not amenable to flash. The balloons are everywhere and they are huge and there is fire and car lights and house lights all in a choreographed cacophony. For the mornings when you are not a participant find some high ground to shoot from. I was lucky in that our hotel had a nice deck by their breakfast buffet which gave 360 degree view. It wasn't planned by me just blind luck or the skill of our travel guy. (Cappadocia Inn, highly recommend.) Also recommend the Ihlara Valley walk. It was about a 5km hike along the river very cool, lots of history lots of caves. Of course see all of the rock stuff you can cram in, their cave houses and churches etc are incredible. We had a great time and the people are really fun and they are used to tourist. You won't see any other Americans but lots of Europeans probably fewer Russians than we saw. English is pretty common. I wish I had your photo skills, my 4700 pictures would be much better.

Hi Cyn,
My wife was in Cappadocia a few years ago with 3 girlfriends and had a great time. There are plenty of photo opportunities and I have attached photos she took. I apologies for the quality as she only had an old point and shoot.
Regards
Wally

We have been to Turkey several times, and Cappadocia twice. It is a marvelously scenic place. In addition to what the others here have suggested, you should absolutely visit one of the 36 "underground cities" in the region. You can Google that to see what I am talking about.

I have never been to Cappadocia, a state like Utah, but have always heard stories about it from my maternal grandfather who was born there but left it for Istanbul at age 13. His father was painting frescoes in Christian churches in the area around Nigde, but if necessary he could also build one from scratch. If you see late 19th century small churches, they may be the work of my great grandfather. Elia Kazan lived a beginning like my grandfather and immortalized it in his autobiographical movie "America, America". My paternal grandfather lived in Adana, in neighboring Cilicia, a state like Texas.
I suspect you are going on a guided tour, so no worries. Enjoy!
I would love to come along!

Do not know about this location, but if you are close enough, do not miss Ephesus.

We were there this past Christmas - lovely area to visit. Great food, scenic places to shoot and lots of balloon rides. Don't miss out on doing a balloon ride - it's a thrill. Some of the things we did other than the hot air balloon ride - Goreme Open Air Museum, Uchisar Castle, Fairy chimneys, Derinkuyu Underground City, Carpet factory (we ended up buying many carpets - make sure you bargain if you shop; about 35 to 45% off list price), Pottery factory, Hike in the valley - beautiful and very scenic drives.

I'll send you a link to my albums via PM.

Cappadocia encompasses a wide area. The geology is interesting but difficult to photograph, especially midday. The insides of many of the cave homes are interesting, but will probably require a tripod and you may not have that luxury.

In the old desecrated Christian churches you will most likely be absolutely prevented from taking any pictures, so be prepared to be disappointed.

You did not say if you were going with a large or small group.

While there we did stay in a very nice cave hotel.

I would heartily endorse the idea of taking a balloon ride. I was able to get some really interesting stills and video while doing so. It can be a bit cramped aboard and I used my backup camera for that purpose as it's much smaller. Incidentally, we had one of the most unique experiences ever on that balloon trip. We've had the occasion to do several such trips in various countries, but this was a first. As we descended at the end of the trip we watched the chase truck which had a large flatbed approaching perpendicularly to our line of travel. The truck was moving very slowly as we converged and the pilot asked whether we'd like to try to land on the moving truck. We were amazed at his question, but agreed. Much to our surprise he put the basket down on that flatbed as neatly as could be. Unbelievable!
