The least bittern is a 12 inch member of the heron family who, by nature, is extremely reclusive. If you watch the edges of the wetlands you can generally find the bird hiding in the dense reeds where it both nests and hunts. You can on occasion see it bolt in flight from the brush but the birds is almost never in the open. I've been trying since December to find the bird in a uncluttered environment. This weekend I found one in a red maple fairly high up---a first sighting in that situation and grabbed the head shot. The the bird flew to some open reeds and I managed to grab the following series before it flew back into the brush. Altogether I spend nearly 2 hours waiting on this bird to get these shots. I actually very happy with the results.
Hope you enjoy them.

Really Like the Maple tree shot the best. I've only managed a few shots of this guy also, like you said, hard to catch in the open.
Super shots, well worth your wait
