when I need just one lens for a quick day trip, etc., I grab my Tamron 16-300. It's not a lens I would use at night or indoors, but I've been very pleased with the results overall. I've also had the Sigma 18-250 and that did the job, but I like the Tamron more.

Is this not a DX lens, though?

I am going to be spending 2-3 months traveling the east coast/deep south this coming fall and would like to have a decent all-in-one lens for those occasions when carrying two or three lenses isn't practical. I'll be carrying a Nikon D810 and have looked at the Nikkor 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6 VR, which would be ideal except for the mixed reviews it has received from various reviewers ( http://photographylife.com/reviews/nikon-28-300mm-vr/6 gives it a thumbs down, Ken Rockwell http://kenrockwell.com/nikon/28-300mm.htm gives it thumbs up).

My questions are:
1. Do you have any experience with this lens and would you recommend it?
2. Do you know of a similar lens that performs better for a similar price?

Check my website below. I've been very lucky to be able to travel and shoot. From experience I don't carry a lot of glass. I keep it simple, 2 full frame bodies in case one goes down. 3 lenses, 28mm-300mm, 16mm-35mm & 50mm. Plus filters & tripod. I leave all the heavy glass at home. I'm packing for a trip tomorrow.

I agree with Bob. I have that lens on my D750 and I love it. I also agree with Bob on the 95% as it really covers a lot of bases.

The 28~300 is a very good lens. I purchased mine about 2 years ago. It's been on my camera 95% of the time. If I had a choice to take one lens on a trip like you mentioned, that'd be the one.

If I would take only one lens it would be mu Nikon 28 to 300mm lens--it's on my camera 98% of the time

The D810 pairs well with the 24-120mm and the 28-300mm lenses. As a Nikon DX format camera owner, I seekto purchase the 18-300mm lens as an overall one lens choice. I have the 70-300mm but prefer 18-300mm. I know someone who owns the D810. A great camera it is. 36 megapixels.

I have D810 and the Nikon 28 - 300 VR
Good lens, does better at some focal lengths and aperture combinations than others. Lightroom can corrects distortions. Overall I am satisfied with the lens

Excellent display of the capability of the lens.

My personal all in one lens on my F3 to travel with is the Voigtlander 40mm F2 Aspherical. I really don't use zooms. Outstanding lens, fast and light. It's amazing what that lens does for me.

I've read the postings in the Nikonians publication online from their annual outings and many of their very serious photographers use the 28-300 as the walk about optic, with extreme WA and Tele lenses pulled out as needed. I have the18-300 f3.5-5.6 DX version and love it for my sensor size.

Not to quibble, but the 28-300 is a very acceptable travel lens; but is not what I prefer as an everyday "walk around" lens. My everyday lens is a 35mm 1.4.

I'd say it all depends on where you like to walk.

Yep, the thought of carrying that 28-300 everyday, all day makes my shoulder sore already! You might be amazed at what you could cover with one single lens in the 35-45mm range. Not to mention the lens speed.

I have a Nikon DX VR. AF-S Nikkor 18-300mm 1:3.5-6.3G ED.
For what you will be shooting, you will not be disappointed!

Bob,
The OP has a full-frame camera.
Not a good lens choice for that.
