I updated this old 6 year old Dell computer from Win 7 to Win 10 the day it became available for free...back in Sept of 2015, I believe. I had previously bought a new Win 8 computer and returned it because I didn't like it. I had some problems back then mainly because of drivers for hard drives, DVD drives, printers and anything that required a
driver. Mainly because the people that made these things failed update their drivers. Microsoft when the introduced Windows 10 provided some more or less generic or universal drivers. In my opinion, and this is what this is, some worked, some didn't. Over the months, updates have installed in Win 10 new drivers that work.
A word about updates, Microsoft wants you to set your Win 10 computer to receive automatic updates. At first it was hard for me to turn that over to them because past history I had seen KB updates installed that had problems in them resulting in another update to correct the error.
Lately, I've had no problems with that.
Right now I like Windows 10 and have no problems with it. I encourage you to upgrade to Win 10 and here's why, with great trend toward hackers invading your computer these days one needs all the security updates Microsoft can provide. Eventually, maybe next year, they will stop supporting Windows 7 so those security updates will be a thing of the past...like XP is today. Then what are you going to do....buy a new Windows 10 computer...and try to make it run your familiar Software like your old computer. (All you're doing is delaying some work.) Do it now or do it later!
I'm 95 years old, if I can do it, many of you can too!

Not entirely true. If your Win 7, 8, 8.1 had Windows Media, it is still there with Win 10. On my desktop - upgrade from Win 7 Pro, I still have Windows Media Player. On my laptop I also have a Windows Media Player - upgrade from Win 8.1 Pro. There are many free media players available for download.

I think someone must have meant that Windows Media CENTER was missing from Win 10. Windows Media Player is still around....though I use Music Bee (powerful and free) for music.

If you're less than 8 than a clean install MAY be best. if you're 8 it's a cake walk tro 10.

That said, there is always the case where you have some very old app or printer where you may need to find a newer version/driver. So if you're one to grab free apps they often crap the bed on new OS's. You get what you pay for.

If you had/have 8, then you'll be used to the crap that 10 can dish out. IMO...XP Pro and 7 Pro were the best platforms from MS. Don't know why some just don't leave good things alone. Sure I do, mo money, mo money, mo money...

First, I made no claims about ANY individual program.
Windows Media Player does still work. That's a Microsoft program so naturally, unless they decide to discontinue it, it'd be updated.. they didn't
discontinue it.
Right now I'm using one called VSL (or is it SVL, something like that)
Incidentally, I stated in my post that it is "My opinion". I make no claims to it 100% accurate.

I started with IBM punch tape, DOS, then Win 3.1, continually upgraded to newer versions and now to Win 10. It is the best. I also had Win 7 Pro and updated. Actually, I updated within 2 weeks of the initial offering.. No issues. If your PC is compatible, don't hesitate - do the FREE upgrade. No MO!!

As of Jan 1, 2016 over 200 million users have installed Win 10. Did some (very, very few on UHH) of them have installation issues? Yes, but most were caused by insufficient updates to their existing systems or incompatible hardware and drivers.

Some say, "if not broke, don't fix". Win 10 is not a fix. It is a superior OS compared to Win 7 Pro. As with any new software, it does take a little while to become comfortable. (So does a new car, new refrigerator, TV, ...) It can be configured to look like your "old win 7". It is very flexible, with many, many options. Is there learning required? Yes, but isn't that true with most technology? We have all been through many experiences of learning. Trust your ability to assimilate knowledge! Besides, there are many members of UHH who will gladly offer assistance.

That's my opinion. My recommendation - DO THE UPDATE!!

Sorry OnDSnap. No insult intended. From my experience and assisting many others with the upgrade, (I am the amateur PC guru in my complex) I simply disagree with some of your opinions. But I do respect them.

One of the features on Win 10 that is often overlooked is that search works and works well. Cortana is worth it by itself. I had to put a microphone on this computer to find out, though.

An UPGRADE to Windows 10 would be the next version of Windows. Perhaps your friend meant UPDATE. Not knowing the difference between UPGRADE and UPDATE calls the veracity of a "computer geek" into serious doubt.

UPDATE - In software terms, a patch (or update) is meant to address two issues -- (1) to correct bugs (or problems) within the software that makes it perform less than optimal and (2) to add new compatible hardware support.

UPGRADE - Upgrades are different in the sense that they do not address the two issues, but rather advances it to the next version.

I put windows 10 on my desktop and I wish I would have stayed with windows 7. windows ten is very annoying and loaded little glitches. I have windows 7 on my laptop and it's far more trouble free and reliable than windows 10. My advice is don't do it yet.

Simple enough to revert back to Windows 7. Why didn't you do that?

I upgraded an old Asus Tablet from Windows 7 to Windows 10, and it wouldn't run. Kept getting an error message about a missing driver, and the driver wasn't available anywhere, including the Asus website. No problem. I don't use that computer anyway. Then I upgraded a Dell laptop, and couldn't find a number of my files-- including Spider Solitaire (extremely important!), an old version of Quicken, and an old version of Family Tree Maker. Talked to a professional, who said these old programs will have to be loaded from the original program disk (if I can find them), and might not run on Windows 10. I went back to Windows 7 (without a hitch), and will be quite happy there for the forseeable future. Unfortunately, Some day I'll have to face all these problems again.

Windows would have told you that your two old software titles wouldn't run before you installed Win 10. You might have been able to run them in compatibility mode. The games you can get back. It's a download and install.

You might want to run Belarc Advisor. http://www.belarc.com (free download) It will provided a listing of almost everything on your PC - software, hardware components, ... Among the listings are all the software serials. As for Win 10, I have already posted my opinions.

Good luck,
Mark
