First of all, there is no "right answer".
The object is to determine just what the "+" operator in those examples means from only 3 given examples.
There are many interpretations, but one of them is that that operator works as follows:
A + B --> (A multiplied by B) added to A
If that is the interpretation, then 8 + 11 = (8 times 11) plus 8, or 96
I would be curious to see how you define the operator to get 40 or 72

It's a progression.
2+5=7 add the previous answer(5) =12
3+6=9 add the previous answer(12) =21
...
4+7=11 add the previous answer(21) = 32
(Only one right answer.)
Sorry, I'd finish it, but gotta get ready for work...
No fancy math involved just add as follows:
1+4=5
2+5+5=12
3+6+12=21
8+11+21=40
The operator just needs to add, don't understand the new math and too old to learn.

I took the line space between the first three and the last as an implied ellipsis.
Answer is 96...next is 4+7=32 (21+11), 5+8=45, 6+9=60, 7+10=77, 8+11=96
Total of the previous two numbers + the total of the next two!

I am with the 40 crowd. Only because the explanations posted above make sense. I am too math dumb to have figured it for my self. The only math I seem to have mastered is computing depth of field! 😃
