Please Google "Never 10" and download. This will prevent Microsoft from upgrading system.

Thank you!

I am happy with System 7. Or at least as happy as one can ever be with MicroTheft software. What MS is reportedly doing is illegal as hell.

As to me, I'm sending a certified letter today to MicroTheft making it clear that there's no consent to "upgrade" me and that any attempt to do so is criminal behavior.

I'm also happy with Windows 7. Don't want to "upgrade". Let us know what wording you use in your certified letter and what results you get, if any.

The Win7 or WIn8 to Win10 forced FREE upgrade has been discussed on here for months and months. One must turn off "automatic upgrades" and have the computer request your approval to do so, or this happens.

I also learned from Adobe tech support a month or so ago that if your Windows 10 is an upgrade that Adobe products on your computer won't likely work with it and you'll have to call for assistance and possibly reload the software that's not working BUT if you have a clean new Windows 10 that came on a new computer the Adobe products are 99.9% sure to work perfectly when you load them.

Several people on here have had problems with upgrading their Win7 or Win8 to Win10 and ultimately had to return to their original OS (although a friend of mine tried that with his Dell and it really messed up bad). Yet there are people on here who have had NO problems with upgrading. So get ready, and be prepared, to have some or all non-functioning stuff when it's over.

The PC I'm using right now is Win7 and I didn't let it auto upgrade. But I bought a newer, faster, better equipped model of the same Dell about 5 weeks ago and it has Win10 on it from the factory. It has worked virtually flawlessly since I got it. BUT... Dell keeps throwing update notices at me, one of which is a BIOS update. I don't really like to mess with BIOS, especially since the last update sat with a black screen for 26 hours and didn't reboot like it was supposed to. The update said DO NOT turn your computer off during the BIOS update because it could become completely inoperable, so what was I to do? I went ahead and turned it off and had to restart it with the power switch twice but it fortunately came back fine.

Win10 is known for updating itself regularly and it's hard to get it to stop doing that. It doesn't care if you're working on the PC at the time or not. That's a bit irritating but Win10 works quite well otherwise.

"One must turn off 'automatic upgrades' and have the computer request your approval to do so, or this happens." How do I turn off automatic upgrades? Where do I go on my computer to do that?

Any help is greatly appreciated. I don't want an upgrade on my computer unless I put it there.

Click "start" (lower left corner of screen), then "control panel", then "Windows updates". Under "important updates", choose "check for updates, but let me choose whether to download and install them", then click "OK".

I just had to have my desktop computer worked on, and the technician asked me if I was going to upgrade to Windows 10. I said no, as I'm perfectly happy with Windows 7 Professional, and I still remember Windows Vista and Millennium. He showed me in the registry where Microsoft places an instruction to allow it to upgrade without your permission. He deleted it, and the little icon in my Windows Task Bar wanting to upgrade it disappeared. I haven't been bothered with notifications about upgrading to 10 since then.

For those comfortable with "hacking the registry", perhaps you could post the location...

Unfortunately, I'm not that good with computers. That's why I had to pay to get it repaired. I don't recall where it was, as the registry is Greek to me. Sorry.

I agree on OS/2. It was fast, easy to work with, did true multi-tasking in separate windows so they didn't crash each other, and I felt good using it and sticking it to Microsoft. I had hopes for it to become THE OS for everyone and was stunned when suddenly it became a pretty much worthless shell around a copy of real Windows 95 which was a total abortion. Then it was gone completely. Sad...

Steve Balmer ruined Microsoft. And Gates let him. Pathetic. They should be broken apart under antitrust. Government blew that too. 1997 was the wrong time. 2016 is way over due. MS win,7 and office 2007 or 03 work fine. No win 10 on any of my PC,s. MS and Adobe both suck.

We probably shouldn't turn this into a vendor bashing session. I've become increasingly disappointed with all the bugs and problems with iOS recently, especially on an older iPhone 4S. I feel just as manipulated by Apple as I do by Muckysoft, and the quality of iOS 9.3.x on an iPhone 4S is almost enough to make me consider an Android device as my next upgrade.

Tech is just not up to snuff right now.

Android? That's going from the gutter into the sewer system. My Android tablet locks often and I have to restart it. My Android phone acts goofy whenever it wants to for no reason. And Android apps are complete jokes which isn't so bad when they're free.

Well, it's now been at least 18 hours since the takeover of my computer and it still says that operations are in progress and the computer will be turned off automatically when complete. Any suggestions as to how to proceed?

Go on vacation for a couple days? Take a 24 hour nap? Feel confident that your upgrade isn't going to work correctly and start worrying now?

Assuming the upgrade had been completely downloaded before the actual upgrade began, I would assume the process had crashed and restart the machine if it went on for more than 4-6 hours, but that's not advice, just what I would do...

Don't wish to prolong this indefinitely, but I finally turned it off and then on again. After approximately 15-20 minutes of looking at a "please wait" screen, it booted to my old Windows 8.1 with a notice that my computer is scheduled for an automatic update to Windows 10 on Sunday at 11:00 p.m. After all of this I can't wait! My Mac Air is looking better and better all the time.

Well, you now know how to stop the process prior to then if you wish, but while Windows 7 is a solid release, I think most would agree that Windows 10 is a BIG improvement over 8.1. If I had a Windows 8 installation, I'd do everything possible to go to 10 as quickly as possible! I'd also make sure my Windows 8 installation was up-to-date with all the appropriate patches before beginning the upgrade process. Just my 2 cents...
