Back in film days when everyone pinched pennies because of the cost of film and processing, it was more common to be very careful with what you shot, but with digital you can shoot and delete, so shutters are given a work out.

Very good point. Yesterday, I went around town taking shots, and I came home with 135. Of course they weren't all perfect. I had to discard three of them. (I wanted to put a winking smiley face here, but it went to the bottom of my post.) In the days of film, I might have taken that many on a two-week vacation.

* Get Irfanview (free) and also get the plug-ins for it. Start the program, open a photo, click on Image > Information > Exif info.
* Get ExifInfo - also free. Unzip and get the icon onto the Desktop. Find a photo and drag it onto the icon. A window will open with loads of info. Look down the list for Shutter Count (or whatever they call it).

And speaking of clicks, does anyone on this forum know anyone ( non professional shooter) who simply wore out a shutter mechanism on a digital body?

I have a 35mm film Canon in the closet..........

I'm still using a Canon Power Shot G3 I got in 2003. I just replaced the Time/Date battery and it's going fine. It's a bit outdated with only 4MP, but it still takes great 'small' photos.

I've taken thousands of photos with it.

I have three Nikons and each manuel says that the picture count has 999 files, each file holds 9999 pictures. When you get to the last file and last picture (that would be the 999 file with 9999 picture or 999 X 9999 pictures) you need to reset the picture count. If that does not work will the warranty still cover or do I need to buy another camera after 10 million pictures.

10,000,000 is a good round number, and it's what I always use to decide when to replace a camera. As for the 9999 count, that refers to the SD card, I believe, not the camera body.

After the total numberof files reach file number 999 or 9999 in number 999 the shutter-release button will not function. you must reset the file number to 1 and format the sd card. pg 157 in V1 manuel

Let's say you take 500 pictures a day with a camera life expectancy of 10,000,000 shutter acuations. It would take you 20,000 days to reach 10 million photo's, or a little over 54 1/2 years!

So the warranty would expire. The question is who or what would expire first, the warranty or me. LOL

Nikon D800/D800E:
Kevlar / carbon fiber composite shutter with 200,000 exposure durability

Nikon D700:
Kevlar / carbon fiber composite shutter with 150,000 exposure durability *

Nikon D7000, D300s, D300:
Factory tested Shutter life 150,000 actuations

Nikon D5100, D5000, D3100, D3000, D90:
Factory tested Shutter life 100,000 actuations

Nikon Older Models:
Don’t have enough Information, Like D80 is to be said up to 50,000 actuations. But Most newest model min have 100,000 actuations tested on the factory.

Canon gives the "Shutter Tested To" info on their website. It is buried in the features section for each camera. The 5D mark III is tested to 300,000 actuations. The 7D to 150,000. I have a 7D that is still going strong at 186,709! It is now my back up.

Where do you get that kind of info? I can remember when you either had a Copal Square metal or horizontal cloth. Then Titanium in the F1 Canon. Then honeycomb in the Nikon's and faster sync speeds. Curtains for doing repairs got very expensive by then. And stocking all the damn repair parts got to be a pain when users couldn't keep their fingers out of the blades when loading the camera. Made me a lot of though replacing blades.

Canon 60D is listed at 100,000. Where can we find a program to check the shutter count on a 60D. It seems to be excluded from all the listed programs in this threat.

100,000 at 200 shots a day seems like a little over oneyear. Is that right or where can we find more info for the 60D?
