You can copy them right back to your compact flash cards, or whatever media your camera uses. I do this all the time, especially when I am working with clients. Usually, it's the opposite, my Mac to their PC.

Isn't that annoying? I have a few external drives, large and small, and it took several attempts to get one to work with both Dell and Mac. I used the same procedures with each drive, and from what I recall, one would work only on the Mac, one on the Dell, and one on both. Luckily, one was all I needed.

It's all about the drive format and permissions. Drives that do double duty must be granted read/write permission. Disk Utility and the "About..." or "Get Info" window are the tools.

I put mine on CD's and then loaded them into my Mac. It worked just fine.

MAKE SURE THE NEW HARD DRIVE IS FORMATTED TO WORK WITH THE MAC AND WINDOWS. I am not smart enough to tell you what is the best format to use but find out and format the new hard drive before you down load any of it. KEEP the old drive as a back up.

They have open training at Apple stores so if you sign-up, you can have them help you transfer the photos to the Mac.

If you're buying the iMac at an Apple store, bring the Dell with you. Apple will transfer not only the photos but everything else you value in the Dell onto the iMac.

As was mentioned previously, Fat32 or Paragon's HFS+ are 2 file systems that will support both Mac and Windows. Fat32 is free and HFS is either free or a reasonable cost ($20) depending on the Windows version supported. Although I've not used it personally, HFS+ is reportedly a higher performance solution without the 2TB drive size limitation of Fat32.

get an external drive, make appropriate folders for your photos, click and drag photos to designated folders, click and drag folders to iMac. the photos do not need to be formatted for apple to copy them to an apple device. photos are not operating system sensitive.

What he said. Speaking from experience. I have both systems and transfer photos frequently.

One thing I haven't seen here yet is the possibility of importing your ENTIRE PC, Windows and all apps and files, into the Mac, using Parallels Transporter and Parallels Desktop Virtualization software.

Yes, you can run your ENTIRE PC as a piece of software on your new Mac. Chances are good that it will be faster than your old PC, and it will allow you to continue to use software you can't get on a Mac, if that is important to you.

For less than $100 plus a cable, you can move everything. You will need all your software installation keys (including the one for the Windows instance on your PC), and will probably have to make some calls to get the licenses transferred, but it works great.

I've been doing this since 2008, and it works well. I don't need a real PC when I'm set up this way.

There are few things wrong here. First, you don't see a PC trying to emulate the Mac. Second, why would the Mac run faster than the PC? Third, why would you buy a Mac to run
PC software?

I was getting ready to post this very same question, so I look forward to reading the suggestions. I would only add that I'm wondering whether it can be done directly with a USB cable or do you need to download on some other memory source and make the transfer from that?

Keep them on an external so you don't fill up your internal drive, and mane a duplicate copy to store somewhere offsite if the images are valuable to you. With the two options I'd buy a external enclosure that had both USB3 and Thunderbolt2. USB3 will connect to the Dell and Thunderbolt2 is the fastest input available for the iMac. Go to OWC Computers for a selection of drives.

The Apple store probably sold a drive pre formatted for Mac.

I'm a PC guy and know nothing at all about Mac. I would ask does Mac have a copy/paste function? If so that's how i transfer all my stuff from card to HD. Try it.
