I am planning on visiting the Hocking Hills area of Ohio this summer for a family vacation. My kids are 12 and 11 so I need ideas for things to do as well as photo locations. Anyone with experience dealing with lodging in the area will also be a big help, preferably a cabin. Thanks in advance.

Hocking Hills has a website and information number. Why not call THEM directly and ask all of your questions. Also trip adviser is a great site to check them out, the hundreds of people that have been their rate them and helps you see what people like. This is not the place to come to ask your question. Get off your _________ and do some work for a change.

Check out the ranger-led night hikes. Fun for everybody, as long as none of the kids have the light-up shoes!

The state park is great and has nice cabins. I know people who have rented cabins outside the park and have not been disappointed. You can get some pretty swanky places if you don't want rustic. As already stated, visit all of the caves with Old Man's Cave being the showcase. I personally like Ash Cave. They are all close and most are pretty easy hikes.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Hocking Hills has "Old Man's Cave" to offer of which I had taken a photo in that area some thirty years ago with my 4x5 view camera and won a Photographic Society of America gold medal. Back in those days, I entered quite a few PSA salon competitions and I believe the gold medal I had won was in the "Pittsburgh Academy of Arts and Science" competition which was held in Pittsburgh, Pa... Anyway, check out Old Man Cave and you will find plenty of photo opportunities to be had in that area. My particular photograph taken there was that of a cascading waterfall.
Also, within that area, you will find cabin rentals which are operated and maintained by the state of Ohio.

Best of luck to you and have a safe trip!!!!

I see people from all over the world at the Hocking Hills, a tour company from New York sent a girl from Australia here on her coast to coast USA trip, Hocking Hills is listed on many sites as in the top 10 best USA. No brag, just fact.

Will try to do that over the next day or so, Bud S. My work schedule is kind of odd. I already have the guidebook from the tourism bureau, but I prefer to get my info from fellow travelers and photographers. Some things look great in pictures, but they turn out to be more like Third World dung heaps in actuality. Thanks for your offer.

OK, it's really great here, many photo ops, in the summer the falls may be dried up however. My website has lots of shots, many are very old and not very good, I am working on updating to my newer stuff but it takes so much time. my web is www.hockinghillsphotographer.com
a website for cabins and general info is www.hockinghills.com hope that helps. Only a couple nice motels here, mostly cabins that fill up quick. Bud

If you haven't seen Ohio lately, you haven't seen Ohio. What happens in Ohio stays in Ohio. Downtown Cleveland has been transformed, has the world class Cleveland Orchestra and Cleveland Clinic is stuffed with nobility from the Middle East who come there to be treated.
Plus, News Flash, a hot debate is brewing to let concealed weapons into the Republican Convention in Cleveland which will add greatly to an already CONTESTED CONVENTION. See you there.

I usually stay in the KOA down there and they do have cabins. It's just a couple miles from the park.

As for photo advice, check out this article I wrote about it for Nature Photographer Magazine (the link is to my site though)

My husband and I go there a few times a year. We camp in Hocking Hills State Park, and take several day trips there. Things to do include: lots of hiking in the park, and zip lining and canoeing nearby the park. As someone else mentioned the ranger led night hikes are fun, especially for kids. Feel free to PM for more info. It's a beautiful area.
