Strange. My D4s has one

Bad information sorry D4s does not have the illumination light, however, the D750 does. It is a white light between the control knob and the lens. The D600 and D610 both show it on the Nikon web site

Sounds a little better to me! I can see that light on some of the other models, but not on the D3, D4, or D5 models. The only way to get the Focus Assist light on the D3/4 is to use a flash such as a SB800/900/910 or similar. Thanks for the clarification! Bye the way, do you own a D4s? Great little camera?

Yes I do. I actually traded in my D800 and bought up. Hated the ergonomics of the D800. The battery life sucked. Rapid fire only 5 fps. I have loved the D4s. Megapixels are not everything. I have a D750 also. The only down side is the puny battery. I always carry 3 fully charged.

BTW the assist light only comes on when focus is difficult and light low. It does help. I personally find manual focus in low light difficult. If you set shutter to release you'll like get a lot of iffy pictures

Well, you learn something every day. I rarely, if ever, use full manual focus, so my experience is limited. With my aging eyes and my usual subject of sports action, the camera does a much better, and faster, job than I can. I'll do a little testing to see what more I can learn.

And I never set the camera to release priority and so whenever I need to make a shot without waiting for the camera to auto focus then I switch it to manual focus.

I don't believe this is correct, but I just don't have the time to check it out right now. Focus priority is focus priority, no matter the focus type. At least I think so!

In the future it would behoove you to take the 60 seconds to check it out so that you don't post completely wrong answers.

That would not work very well for sports action. Cameras today are faster than we can be.

Have put in manual focus, looks food to me, still wont take pic.

I can change priority in settings?

Mimi,

Go to your menus, and if the same as my D300, under "custom settings"- "auto focus" a1 AF-C and a2 AF-S you have the ability to tell the camera to either release regardless of focus or to only release when focus is achieved with additionally under continuous focus mode to keep focus when shooting in motor mode. Hope this helps.

The settings mentioned can be found by Going to "Menu" >"Custom Settings Menu" >"a-Auto Focus">"AF-C Priority Selection" or "AF-S Priority Selection">Set either or both to "Release"

With those settings it should take a picture no matter how low the light.

I always leave both set to release on my D600
