I've been there. Thanks for taking me back. Did you see the croc in the pond? There were 2 there that I saw.

Great sequence and education. You motivated me. What cruise line and cruise would I have to take to visit those ruins?

Just returned from a cruise to the western Caribbean and a tour of 3 Mayan ruins. These photos are from the first site, Altun Ha which roughly translated to "Rockstone Water" and refers to a man made reservoir on the site. It is believed that the site was occupied from 900 BC to around 1000AD and at it apex was occupied by about 10,000 inhabitants. Deep in the center of the Temple of the Green Tomb they found some remains and over 300 Jade artifacts

Yes very thought provoking.

Consider this:

How could a civilization so technically advanced (centuries in some cases) not have invented or utilized the wheel? This is the reason that they utilized smaller stones as they had no way to transport the larger.

How could they not have understood that their deforestation and agricultural practices that would eventually destroy their world?

Of the, I think 3, remaining books they have only translated maybe 10%.

Thank you for you very kind comments, much appreciated. We cruised onboard the NCL Norwegian Star but I think that most of the larger cruise lines stop at Belize and would offer Altun Ha as an excursion. It is a pretty good bus ride to the site from the port, about and hour or so

Good questions, Thanks for viewing and commenting, much appreciated. With regard to the size of stones, that entire area is as flat as pancake, not a hill or a mountain around. Nowhere cut larger blocks of stone. An example of what you do with what you've got. They were on that site for over 1000 years without any real means of agricultural research, I guess they thought it would never end. We are not far behind although we keep finding ways to get more from less, we are still pretty wasteful of our resources. Let's hope history does not repeat for us.

Thanks for taking a look and commenting, I appreciate it. I did not climb any of the temples, I have enough of a problem walking on flat ground and steps without handrails are beyond me. This site is pretty compact and reasonably easy to get around so I could keep up with the group pretty well. Later sites that we visited were a real challenge due to having to walk over a mile on rough uneven ground.

Glad you liked the pix.
