You have to forgive me but I am a 70 year old beginner. (a bad combination). professional but good enough to take good ohotographs.

Welcome to our forum. When you are posting here, please don't act as if 70 is old. Those of us in that area don't consider ourselves old. We are experienced.

Jerry since I am only 69 I'll say 70 is old as dirt. Now to the problem. You may have to focus in manual. The lens may have trouble finding something to focus on so it wont let you take the picture. I have a Tamron that does that. - Dave

My camera is a Canon EOS 600d.
when I use my 50-250 canon lens and try to take a close up by zooming with my lens when I press my button to take the photo it won't click my lens just turn trying to adjust and the button feels like there is resistance. when I take an ordinary photo it's okay but as soon as I try to zoom or to use my macro this is the problem I have. What am I doing wrong? I have it set on the green auto setting. Carole

Hi Carol, I think you are trying to get closer than your minimum focussing distance and I think your lens is 'hunting' trying to lock onto something it can focus on. Have a look at what your minimum focussing distance says on the lens and keep that far away. Darryl

May I suggest trying. . . First turn auto focus off, manually set your focus to the minimum distance & your zoom to maximum. Next, compose your scene. Now, move your camera - toward & away from your subject - ever so slightly, until your subject is in focus. Then, make your photo.

Try different zoom settings, too. Try setting your zoom to the 'wide angle' setting, and mid-way between wide & tele settings.

Good luck.

Don't let 70 stop you, I will be 75 this year. Keep reading your camera manuals etc. I became a computer tech at the age of 62! (Been taking pioctures since I was 12)

One suggestion for your lens is to use a close-up attachment like the Canon 250D or the 500D. I use it successfully on my 100-300 zoom for closeups. This is an relatively inexpensive way to do close-ups with what you have now.

Good luck---Joe

Not sure what you mean by resistance. Try setting the lens to manual focus and see how it feels through the full focus range and the full zoom range from wide to tele. If something doesn't feel right have a photo repair shop check it out. You may have indicated resistance as far as the release button. Sorry but I can't tell from the wording. But the release "feel" is not going to change depending on any lens settings. It might be (as mentioned before) that with the lens on AF you're closer than the lens is capable of focusing. Switch to manual and see how it works. Hard to diagnose a problem without actually knowing more. Play
around with it and send another post. Plenty of help here on UHH. I spent over an hour on the phone with a friend on a computer problem and finally drove the 20 miles to his house and fixed it. Easier than trying to walk him through it on the phone. Plus he had plenty of cold beer.

Thanks for trying to work out my wording I guess I don't express myself very well. I think it probably is that I am standing too close. I would love you to come and see my problem and advise me. Two problems I live in Australia and I don't have any beer

We've heard in the news here about how people in Australia are suffering from natural disasters, but they haven't mentioned the worst of all - no beer. Maybe they're having trouble getting enough aluminum - sorry, aluminium - to make those huge cans you use.

You would see a mass exodus of the male species if that was the case.

Australia is on my "bucket list". I have a friend who retired from IBM a few years back and his boss asked if he wanted to go there on a business trip. My friend asked what it involved and was told "It doesn't involve you doing anything. We have to send a group down there and I can include you. Just a favor for all you've done all these years." He wasn't able to take his wife but she's a great person and told him "go for it and have fun!" He's not much of a photographer but I still enjoyed the photos he brought back.
