I am beginning to work with Photoshop and some old family photos. I am posting two versions of the same photo. One is a scan of the original the other has been worked on.. I am seeking experienced suggestions for further improvement.

Just what I need is another photo editing software to try and comprehend.
You've taken a faded, yellow stained old original photo and turned it into a nice b&w. What is that you're trying to do. I've repaired and revitalized a lot of old photos and you've done a good job. I have to ask - what do you want out of it? It looks to me like you can have it either original or fixed. There's not much else as best I know. If the original doesn't need restoration, it's okay as it is. If you want b&w, do it. Looks like you've done a good job with this one. Do the rest but keep both, one for those who like original and one for those who like rebuilt.

Restoring old photos is one of my hobbies. I only go grayscale when the picture you are working on is the only thing you can do to make it better. You can always put a sepia tone back in the grayscale, but I don't think it looks as good as the original was. I usually start with a high DPI (Dots per inch) scan of the picture I want to work on, make a copy of the scan, and then try and do whatever you need to make it look the best it can. I've been doing it for several years, and it's basically just a lot of experimenting with different things in your photo software.
If you are good at PS, you shouldn't have too much trouble. It all depends on the condition of the original picture you want to restore too. If I can be of any other help just let me know.... Mike
Just sort of stumbling along with photoshop. I am just trying to create some images for my children of their ancestors.

Best Vet... Do you have a scanner, or did someone scan it for you? If you'd like to send me a copy of your original scan, I'll try and let you know what I'd do to improve it. mike702@ymail.com. More than glad to help. Up to you.
How about this? hehehe. I've been looking for a photo to try learning to colorize on. Thought just for laughs I'd try it here. Done with PSE9
original photo
I'm curious where the original was taken...looks like Adirondack architecture in the backround.
That is quirky and great.. I believe this was taken at a park outside Burhnam, PA. Eventhough I am ancient this was pre me. The child would be my Aunt at less tha a year so suspect this is 1911-1912. I believe the structure in the background is an outdoor dance pavilion.
