Hi JDM,
I am also planning an African safari for 2017. What travel company are you using (Safari Ventures, OAT?)? Have a great trip! Thank you

Sadly, I'm not going. It's a friend of mine that travels the world. Glad to hear you're planning a trip. Have a wonderful time!

If I may, I'm going with OAT in June for a 15-day trip to Israel. The don't have any single supplements, which saves a ton of money. My parents have gone on about a dozen trips with them and, except for my mom's most recent trip with them (which wasn't their fault) they have nothing bad to say about them (PS with regard to insurance, get some...you never know). I booked my trip last February and can hardly wait!

I was going to Isreal last year with Oat and they canceled me out because there wasn't enough people signed up for that trip. I wound up going to Turkey and loved it.
I made my own air reservation (saved a couple of $$) and I couldn't change my flights because of Oat cancelling my trip.

My trip is full (15 or 16) and I'll get my own room...so far. I also bought my own flight and saved $850, so I put some of the money to work (I'll see if it was worth it as I've never flown anything but coach) and got upgraded seats (Delta's Economy Comfort+ seats), bulkhead just behind business class. I was considering ElAl, but my parents advised me to steer clear of Aeroflot and a few others. I'll be spending my birthday about 1/2-way through the trip :)

I flew Turkish airlines........best flight every. All the meals were first class. Only problem I had was the seat assignment..it sucked.

Can you post any pics you got with the Lumix? I'm debating whether to take my new used FZ-200 or rent a lens for my DSLR.

Sure. As soon as I figure out how. Also took the canon sx50 to Galapagos. Very similar to your lumix. Will do

Easy. When responding or after (depending on what you decide - reply or quote reply) just add pics as attachments. If you click "store original" it will be able to be seen full-size.

you sure get to travel a lot. I'm going to try and travel within the US.
I had a SX50 and sold it. Just didn't feel right.

Nice pics. I don't think I'll regret saving the space and weight taking the FZ200 vs the Sony...I hope. The whole camera doesn't weigh too much more than my 17-50 lens and is about half again as wide. It won't have the MP, but it'll do better in aperture and length than my 70-300. I wouldn't have taken the macro in any case. If only Delta didn't charge an extra $100 for a checked bag and the tour company didn't have space restrictions I'd probably take my Sony and (maybe) rent an 18-270 or something like it. I've never rented before, but I checked one out and it was like $275 if I took insurance for about 18 days.

I don't think you'll regret it. It's a great camera with good reach. And you want to see as well as photograph. Bring lots of memory cards and an extra battery. I usually went through both batteries in a day. The usual is an early am and then a later safari trip so you can recharge between. It's a special trip!

One way to cut down your cost of your gear on a plane is to ware it and don't check it.
