Has anyone tried the new Vanguard GH -100 system. It looks pretty nice but will it hold a nikon D300 with a 300 mm F-4 securly?????

You should be OK. The specs say it has a 6kg capacity; I come up with about 2.27 kg for the D300 (825 grams) and the 300mm (1.44kg). Flash and batteries not included in calculation.

Should work just fine. BTW, what are the opinions on Vanguard ball heads in general? They look to be more robust than similarly priced Bogens.

I have several Vanguard ball heads, however, they are for an L bracket. Vanguard makes some very nice products at a good price point.
