No problem at all. I've used the same card in different brands, models, and formats with no problem. Each camera makes its own folder on the card.

For once I agree with Rongnongno...have switched cards from Canon to Nikon etc...

me too! You can use the same SD card in many cameras; it is always a good idea to format the card as soon as you put it in the camera.

I use memory cards in multiple cameras all of the time. However, generally, I format the card in which ever camera I am using. This is not always the case and the Nikon cameras generate a separate folder for that camera.. like NikonD7100/DCIM/ and NikonD610/DCIM on the same card.

But since you can now purchase a 32gb card for $10.00, why take any chances of possibly losing data.

When I bought my new 7DII, I didn't have a CF card lying around. At around the same time, I bought a used 5DII, and that had a couple of cards with it. I put one of them into the 7DII. It must have had some images on the card, because the camera took the image count from that. My very first images with a new camera were in the 9000 range. Given that Canon do not have an easy way of getting shutter count, the image number is usually a reasonable idea, at least until it wraps round.

I read about this behavior in a book later, but it did not explain a simple way of resetting the number.

Probably not an issue for the OP with class cameras, but worth bearing in mind for other users.

If anyone *does* know a way of resetting the number, I would be interested in hearing it. According to the book I read, the camera takes the highest between its own stored number of the last image taken, and the highest number on any installed card, and then increments this number for the new photo.

For years I have routinely switched SD cards between my Pentax DSLR's and Canon Point'n Shoots with no problems and have never needed to reformat the card each time!

I've swapped memory cards among cameras a number of times with no ill effects. Done it with Nikons and with Kodaks, with DSLRs and with bridge cameras.

Hate to bust your bubble but, I've switched cards between cameras and had to format them. It may not be between all makes or models but, you can't make it a flat statement that a card will work between any two cameras without formating.

Seems you are squarely in the minority in this opinion.

It's not that you're not supposed to use the same card in different cameras, you just have to format the card to each camera each time. Make sure any images are taken off or they'll be lost. Oh, yeah. It's not a myth. If a card was used in 1 model camera & moved to another, the 2nd camera will tell you the card needs to be formatted.

No need to re-format... I switch SD cards betwen my D7100 and a Nikon Cool Pix P7000 without formatting. I will have DSC-xxx files and DSCN-xxx on the same card. Never had a problem and never lost an image !! By the way, I format a card once the first time I use it and NEVER again. I use SanDisc and never had a card go bad and never lost an image (that I know of !!)..

Please excuse me because I am new here but it seems so simple. I always download my photos off the card after a session and back them up on external hard drives. I then put the SD cards in a ziplok bag. I use different cameras. I reformat the cards when I put them in any camera. I have never had a problem with any of my SD cards or lost any photos so far.

I've found, and been told many times, each card has to be formatted to a particular camera and that this should be done after every upload. I've found this good advice and do it all the time. A card may capture a picture from one camera to the other but this also can cause the card to fail. Best to keep a card for each camera.

Why not! Do it all the time. But I reformat the card on the camera before using. It will make life a little easier for you! 😀
