Grain is very hard to see with my D80.... I do a lot of chimping, sometimes I think my light meter is off in my camera... I use a lot of manual focus lenses, so I usually just eyeball the pic for exposure...

I have had that happen. I have set my camera to ISO 800 max on auto-iso.
While I NEVER use auto-iso it is easy to choose it by error.
