Just a couple add ons, I only use the 3200 iso to focus on the stars, I take the shots at much lower iso.
During the day at Zion, there is a spot where you can't drive beyond and must take the shuttle. I went there an hour or so after dark and got some very nice mw shots. I wish I could remember the nam of this spot.

Edit: Canyon Junction was where I got my best shots, lots of cool foreground. I did this before I found out about all the terain through the tunnels to the east side of the park so there's probably better spots, but it was the best I'd found and we left next morning. Btw, I'm envious of your trip, have a ball!

2nd edit: Don't let the moon be a problem, it just changes the type of shot you get, sometimes beautifully. Shoot with it, without it, around it whatever! Lol!

Well that's interesting about using the higher ISO for focusing and then dropping it back down. I know I'll have to experiment with the cropped sensor to find the right ISO that doesn't have excessive noise (if I can't get the FF).

I've been to Zion & Bryce several times before and I'm wondering if the place in Zion you're talking about is the rock known as Temple of Sinawava which is at the end of the Valley road? Does the shuttle run past dark? I love the view from the Junction over the Virgin River--so picturesque.

I've seen some Milky Way pictures where it looked like there might even be a bit of first light on the horizon. I have no idea what to expect but am glad to hear that there's wiggle room with the lighting. :-)

Booked the flights last September and have been tweaking the plans ever since. Now it's hard to believe the trip is mere days away!

FYI. All reservations in AZ are DTS. Everywhere else is not.

Found it, now I have to figure out how to use it! As I said, I'm not knowledgeable about astronomy or lat. & long. references.

I have been using a Sunrise/Sunset website for years in order to print a calendar for my trips showing the sunrise/sunset and moonrise/moonset for each zone that I will be traveling in. It helps that it takes into consideration Daylight Savings Time (or not, as in AZ) for each location. As I recall, Monument Valley DOES observe DST.

Just an old dog!

Sorry, mirror up does nothing on a 30 sec exposure. The mirror slap vibration only lasts approx ½ second which has almost zero effect on a 30 second exposure. Mirror up is only practical/useful on shots between ¼ second to 4 seconds.... give or take. Just saying.

I stand corrected.
