If you can remember when it started happening, go to system restore and pick a date that was close to but before the time it started to happen and restore. System restore records previous good startups and places where, just before any updates are installed. It wont delete any files.
Try that it has always worked for me

Okay, last night before I went to bed, I left my Intuos 4 graphic pad mouse lying on the pad. This morning when I turned on the screen I had no problems. Everything worked fine. Before you start on the graphic's pad and pen, I have had this for a very long time with no problems. Anyway, I am still researching the issue and report back when I have more info.

Make sure your Dell has the latest firmware. We had a hundred of them at work where the monitor would not come back on and it looked like the system was asleep. Some Windows update triggered something that was fixed by a firmware update.

Had the same problem. Think it was video card overheat. Reboot fixed and has not happened again

I had something similar and it drove me nuts. I started to think it may be the video card. I wrote down al the keyboard steps to restart it and was able to do that blindly using the keyboard. So I replaced the video card and now it works fine. When the screen was dead on wake-up or virus. I thought the machine was frozen but the tower iights were on and saw disk movement.

Are we talking Desktop or Laptop? My old HP Laptop would often crash or freeze from heat build up. Eventually the screen would seem to go blank (black) but it was on, only the back-lighting was failing on the Laptop screen. I was still able to use it with an external monitor. I eventually replaced the whole thing with a DESKTOP TOWER. No more overheating. Also Windows Vista seemed to act like what you are describing as well. Going to sleep and not waking up.

You might run some diagnostics like a Disk Scan, Defrag, or Disk Repair "DOS" type thing. Might be a bad sector on your HDD where Windows resides.

Same thing happened to me with my HP laptop. In researching, I found out that my particular model was notorious for overheating. Any repair was going to be costly, so I went back to a tower desktop.

Have you tried throwing a glass of ice cold water on it!

Okay guys, here's my problem. I am using a PC with Windows 7 Extended OS. Just recently when my computer goes to sleep I can't get it to wake up. Nothing seems to work, Mouse, spacebar etc. I have to do a hard shutdown and reboot. This seems to happen more often when it has been sleeping all night or for a extended period of time. I have never had a problem with this until recently, the computer is about 4 years old. Any suggestions on how to fix this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

OK, I went to control and clicked on "sleep". That resulted in "power saving mode" and a black screen. The keyboard and mouse were unresponsive to any input including "control, ault & delete". Turning the monitor off and then back on resulted in immediately returning to the point where I had left off. My drives have always operated between 105 and 125 F so I leave the covers off for max airflow. None of the cards cards ever get above the low 90's however.

Amazing how quickly computers can become old. I did my training on Windows XP. It was about 6 years ago. A friend still has it. No more updates or support. Not even sure if he can update to Windows 10 from XP. He says his intent is to buy a new one. Someday? Obviously this is not a young person.

NO upgrades from XP or Vista directly to Windows 10. The free upgrade is only available to 7 or 8.1.

Be prepared to pay for Windows 10 or do some sort of workaround, like format and put a legal 7 or 8.1 and then upgrade.

XP was purposely designed to NOT be upgraded, and the Vista OS was purposely kept from the "free" 10 offer because of it's vastly inferior history during the run.

Windows 10 has been great consistent with the way it was offered. An upgrade of an already functional and stable product.

Be sure to differentiate between sleep and hibernate. Nobody (manufacturing wise) got hibernate right. Locks up the computer more often than not.

I suspect you may have changed your power options, and slipped your computer over to hibernate from sleep.

Frankly all of those options are BS. I turn my computer off when not using it. I generally leave it on all day, and turn off all sleep and hibernate options. I shut it down at night or for longer periods away from the system, like days or weekends.

I don't leave my car idling in the driveway or garage overnight. How is my computer different?

PS... I am a 25 year PC tech and consultant.

As for style of machine.... if mobility is not a concern, Desktop before Laptop every time. Nothing is more idiotic than a laptop that never leaves the house. Dollar for dollar, desktops are less expensive, more versatile on graphics and configuration, and have less problems.

My current Dell XPS with Windows Vista second edition does just about the same thing On start up you get as far as the Windows login password and when you type it in the screen goes black after about 20 seconds and never boots up completely
I can operate it in "safe mode" but not for the inet In addition when it ws operating properly I couldn't touch the underside because it was so hot
The tech said since it was 6 years old and with Vista to trash it It had 4 g and 600 memory but still not enough to upgrade to win 10 In addition Vista goes out of existence the end of this year per Windows tech group
I am interested in try to get mine up again but don't want to spend more on another system

Hi,

First: I see no reason to buy a new PC. The specs of your existing one are ample to run Win 10 and any programs.

I noticed you have a Dell. Have you tried their tech support. I know it is out of warranty, but they probably have remote service for a small fee - certainly less than a new PC!! Microsoft can also offer the same remote service. It is probably an easy fix. You might try going back to a restore point prior to the power issue.

Good luck. I'm sure a solution exists.

I had the same problem with my last pc with Windows Vista. I could not fix it on my own (I can repair most of my computers) so brought it in and turns out that there was a video card issue. The computer was old and I wound up getting rid of it rather than replacing the card....
