I already would have a long first and last name and my mother wanted to spare me additional letters in my middle name so my birth certificate includes only the letter "E". I had no problems until my stint in the military. Forms I filled out would be returned until we settled on the field completed as "E (no middle name)". Mom had the best of intentions, but it didn't work out too well.

On NCIS LA, one of the main characters didn't know his first name until recently. All he had was the letter G, so that's what they called him. He recently learned his real name.
