If you have a smart phone you can save all but a few $ - costs less than $5. Try gps4cam. This is a smart phone app that tracks your gps location. It then produces a QR Code that you photograph and a small piece of software on your pc or mac or laptop runs through and tags all of the images.

Come to think of it, I did have a couple of apps for my Android that recorded GPS on the phone. One was free, and one I paid for. That was back when Verizon gave me free data, and I don't know if GPS would use my limited data.

GPS works off the map on the iPhone. iMap does not use cellular data but sees the gps satellites directly. This was good news to me also.

The nice thing is the ease of tagging the images later but before I import into LR. I think that there is also a way to do this within LR, however I like to keep things simple.

That's cool!

I found the website. There is an Android version too. It costs $3.00. The website says it does not need a data connection and only uses the GPS in the phone.

Magellan often has sales and you should be able to find something well within your price point. Good luck!

I use my iPhone, which is right in my pocket. Can go all day without killing battery. There are several free apps that will create GPX files and sync them with Dropbox. From there to Lightroom, and you are all set.

Avengene-

I use one called GPX Master, which works fine, so I haven't tried others. But I know there are several available. GPX Master allows control of distances so one can save battery, but even without limiting, I have not had a battery problem on the iPhone 6. It syncs with Dropbox automatically.

I used to use an dedicated external GPS unit. Usually forgot it or the batteries were dead. I now use the iPhone app "Geotag Photos Pro 2" ( http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/geotag-photos-pro-2/id1008694552?mt=8 ). Easy to use, always with me, sends files to a Dropbox folder where it's easy to access when mapping in Lightroom.
If you have a smartphone, I'm sure you can find a good geotag app.

For now, they say the pro version is Apple only and Android is coming.

Does anyone have a suggestion on a handheld GPS device at the $200-$250 price point I could use to track shooting locations then sync with Lightroom?

If you have an Android phone or tablet with GPS you already have it. There are several free apps that record tracks.

Will that use data while it's running? If you have unlimited data, that's no problem.

The one that I use does not depend on data. Just adds the time to your GPS location, which you can conveniently sync later.

It's a bit more expensive; however, many people already have one... your smart phone.
