My Canon 7D mkII has a built in flash ...which I( would almost always NOT prefer to use. But on top of that flash is a shoe. When I try to use that for off camera flash it fails to fire. All batteries are charged. Any comments... and thanks in advance

What off-camera flash do you have?
What flash and trigger are you using?
I use a Canon 580X ii and I use a cord to trip the shutter. I almost always shoot from a tripod thus the cord

Which cord are you using for the flash?
Most on the flashes and camerers are designed to talk together. If be chance your system doesn't or is not compatible it may not flash or give unexpected results.
Check your flash manufacture and model numbers for compatibility.

DT, first, make sure the flash is enabled in the menu. Next, fire the flash without the cord/trigger using just the shutter button to fire the flash with the cord/trigger removed and see that it works, then try with the trigger to make sure the trigger does not disable the hotshoe.
On my Canon, I can not fire a strobe using a trigger if I'm in Live View as the LV mode automatically disables the hotshoe! Good luck. ;-)

My advice, dump the cord and get a radio trigger. As it happens I have just such a device. I will give it to you if you will pay the postage.

Nice!! (I hate cords too)
I have the same equipment and it has served me flawlessly. But what shoe on top of the flash are you referring to unless you're referring to the "hot shoe" on the camera. For off camera flash I use the OC-E3 "shoe cord". Once you are assured that the 580 flash is energized, then make sure all contacts between the cord, camera and flash are fully engaged.

NEVER, NEVER, give your address out like this. Use the private message app. Please remove this. It reminds me of the brides announcing their wedding with their address before the wedding. Now the, THOSE PEOPLE, know where you live and that you have equipment some where in your house. Please remove this post.
Don,
1-Is flash firing enabled on the 7D?
2-Does the 580 fire when mounted to the hot shoe?
if the answers are yes
3-What are you using to connect camera to flash when the 580 is off camera? If it's a cord......you need to have the right cord.
4-Have you tried putting the 580 in slave mode and using the 7D's built in flash to trigger the 580? (make sure the flash's sensor is facing the camera)

If the hotshoe or the flash is disabled via menu or other reasons as SS pointed out, the wireless triggers won't work either.
Get this problem fixed first to see if its the flash, cord, camera problem, camera configuration, or human error. Switching to wireless is just going to add more things that have to go right to get a flash (crawl first then walk)

RTFM (Read The ~Fine~ Manual). It's most likely a simple menu setting. Canon's remote hot shoe cords rarely fail.
