I think the the Feisol tripods recommended here by Gene51 are a serious contender in a lightweight weight, super sturdy tripod. I have already purchased another brand but if I had looked at these first I probably would have purchased one. The more I look at them the more I like them. The thing that impresses me most is that these units will handle fairly big cameras and lenses at a very reasonable price for this kind of quality.

Good luck with your own selection. Lets us know what you choose and how you like it.

Don't get your shorts in a bunch. I offered the OP an answer recommending a tripod and further gave an informed opinion on the possibility of monopod use. Yes, it depends on your use. The fact that you keep bringing up extreme uses and reasons to not use is a bit humorous. I thought the question was basically about "lightweight tripod-hiking and travel".

I do not favor monopod use,but in certain terrains and long hikes. I find ample opportunity to use it with great results. So in reality, I am enhancing my comps as opposed to old shakey hands with no support. Yes,it is great for me.

Not bunched up, I simply pointed out that shooting landscapes means long exposures which you can't do on a monopod period.

The Air Force refers to helicopters as helicopters.

The Army refers to them as choppers.

The Marines point and say "Duh.."

I had that little quip shared with me when I was an Army platoon sergeant for a mixed bunch of Airborne and others who figured out I came from the Corps after noting the difference in marching movement commands.

Looking for suggestions for lightweight tripod

I currently use a Nikon D7000 and a 18-200 telephoto

I plan to use it mostly for family stuff

Thank you

Look at the Mephoto (spelling???) Travel tripod. The carbon one is just under 3 lbs. Holds a large Canon and lenses just fine if you are careful. I like night photos when I travel and it does great.

I really like my Manfrotto 190, 4 leg section tripod. Light but holds my 7D with a 100 - 400mm just fine. I got a bag with a shoulder sling to carry while walking. I almost never leave it behind this way. With out the bag you tend to debate carrying a tripod. But this light and strong tripod fits in a relatively small bag and can go everywhere. No it is not the rock of Gibraltar. But take a plastic grocery bag, put local rocks in it, and hang it from the tripod if more dampening is needed.

Don't select proprietary devices like manfrotto. Aside from all the other comments, vibration factor needs to be considered. Carbon fiber is the only way to go with a current 6x wrap. Check out RRS and Gitzo. RRS has a detailed listing on quality functions and features. Consider used from ebay to save money. RRS has excellent heads and L-brackets.

I agree with all of the comments about sturdy tripods and I have one. However, because it is heavy (7-8lbs) with the ball head and somewhat bulky (29 inches) even if I did take it on a trip, it usually remained in the hotel room unused.
I recently bought the carbon fiber Mefoto globe trotter which is 3.7 lb. with the supplied ball head and folds to 16 inches for travel (highly recommended by B&H). My heaviest rig is a D800 with 70-200 2.8 lens. The tripod is plenty stable (unless you bump it) and the ball which has a fine and gross tension adjustment held my camera in place overnight without droop.
You can save $150 by going with the aluminum version at a cost of less than 1 lb. Also the mefoto tripods convert to a monopod which is really handy.
Don't trust the "load capacity" rating on any tripod, you need at least 3 0r 3 times the weight of your gear.

Is that starry sky a composite? I can't help wondering because it seems to me that the light pollution from a large city like Istanbul would make such a starry sky impossible.

Did you get the shot from the upper story window of a hotel?
