Practice, practice, practice! The more comfortable you become with it, the better it will serve you.

Enjoy your trip MtnMan. And thanx for the video link.
I have a monopod in the garage, that I never use because I never had much luck with it. Now that I watched the video you provided, I'm going to get it out and learn how to use it. Nothing much beats my tripod, but sometimes tripods are not allowed in places, and should not be allowed in some places where we're allowed to use them. The local museum comes to mind.

That was the reason for my question. I've noted we have some strong advocates for monopods but never had success myself. I figured they must know something I don't. The one I had wasn't very good so I thought I'd try a better one this time. From previous experience I know a tripod won't work in this environment.

Some good ideas already to try out!

Alas more and more practice with flawed technique only makes it more flawed. Thus the quest for skilled advice.

For example many have advised to push down. The archer explained why that is a bad idea. Having a little experience with archery, where it is all about stability of your aim, I buy his advice on that. And on positioning of your foot and the monopod base. Once again many of those giving advice didn't get that.

I think it will mostly be the tiered seating things. We are going to several camps so may be a variety. There is likely to be some shooting right from the camp.

What company are you going with, and where?

Thanks for the suggestions so far. There are indded plenty of videos. Alas, they do not agree.

I'm inclined to favor this guy's advice because he is an archery shooting expert. I used to flail a bit with a bow so understand the analogy. Don't watch this if you are offended by crude language, though.

One of the most polished and professional YouTube videos I've ever seen.
I am going to give his $&!:@& advice a try though.

I mounted a Vanguard Pistol grip on top of a mono pod...with the grip to the right side of the body along with a cable release for my right hand....leaving my left hand free for the focus ring and a little more control with the lens.

Its not that simple. He is going on a safari and, unless he is going to one of those expensive private game reserves, he will be shooting from a vehicle. Stabilizing a monopod in a vehicle is much different than when standing on the ground.

Yeah, it is. He can simply have someone drive him around for practice. Geesus. What planet are you from?

What's your problem Jim Bob? Is the UHH Forum not a good place to ask questions about most anything photography related. Geesus.

Good for you Marion, what happened to someone having a question and going to the best place to get an intelligent answer.

Just got a new monopod. This one is pretty sturdy and has a simple swivel head to attach the camera/lens (Manfroto 679B). Went for three section to make setup quicker. Will be using on African Safari with Nikon 200-500 lens.

Advice on how to best stabilize it?

My wife and I have been over there a couple of times and it depends on what type of vehicle you’ll be in. Our vehicle had open tops and sand bags worked best. If sides or open mono may be ok. I used a 18/300mm, the wildlife was less than 50' from our vehicle, my wife took our SX50 it's extra reach was only used 2 or three times shooting Kudo's. Have fun.

Surely you don't consider UHH the best place? On second thought, you probably do. That's your first and probably not your only problem.

In my exoerience many places that do not allow tripods do not allow monopods either. This is not written to discourage you from working on your skills, but simply as advice to call ahead to find out.

Correct me of I'm wrong but doesn't a mono pod give stability in the first place?

We are traveling via a group that rents private planes. Our friend who arranged this has rented from them and flown himself three times previously. They made all the lodge reservations. This time there are six of us and we've rented a larger plane with pilot. We fly from Johannasburg SA.

We are going to Zimbabwae and Botswana. A total of four camps two to three days each.

Well yeah, sort of. But much less so than a tri-pod. For true stability something needs to "compensate" for the absence of two legs.
