This is a Paper Wasp (Polistes metricus), not a bee: http://bugguide.net/node/view/11059

Going to start charging them rent but , when I showed the price they said they would let me photograph them in exchange for the rent payment.....that did not go over well with the wife at all.... :D :D

Tom, I guess we are geographically close to each other. I saw my first one of the year a couple of days ago along with a lot of borer bees flying around. I have been "attached" by different species of wasp the last two years and my reaction to their poison is not good. The little black ones that nest in the ground. I love to photograph them but I am sure glad my lenses I use have IS!!!

Yes we are pretty close....
I was lucky to not have been attacked but , I was watched very closely though. All my shots that I have taken of these guys have been with my 105mm so I have been rather close enough so, that I can them hiss at me or whatever noise it is that they make.. :D..Not sure if I really want to document them like I did last year....but.... probably well...you know how us "kids" we will keep at it till we get hurt....lol

This wasp is especially painful when you are stung. Steer clear as much as possible use a telephoto. They will sting you even if you are just in the path to the nest. I know from experience.
The shot is a good one.

I was lucky last year not to have been stung ... hopefully my luck has not changed for this year.....except to maybe win the lottery... :-D
