I never understood this style where the fender is separated from the tire by so much space. Isn't the purpose of the fender to protect the rider and following vehicles from mud, stones and debris flipped at him or her by the tire? It can't do it's job effectively with so much separation. But, it looks cool.

The rider yes, and it does quite well to keep the rider fairly clean. The guy/gal behind the rider's on their own.

Dirt bikes are made for jumps and rough terrain. With the suspension needed, there has to be room for wheel travel. That's the reason for so much room

That bike is an old one........you can tell instantly because of the dual shocks in the back. Now everything is mono shock in back.

Brent, I believe they came out in the year Elvis died. There was one on the floor of the Mall, in Dallas, when Elvis was in the news.

Marion, I'm a little slow finding these old postings. I remember those alright.
I think that was the werks bike raced by Marty Smith!
Is that the one with the Sachs style radial head??
I raced a 75 Elsie, I think. The one after the green one, but as you already know I went to RM's after that!! Those where the real days of racing. When a couple of layed down shocks were da BOMB!!!!!!!!!

I think Marty raced 125's. Not sure if he raced 250's.
Not sure about the head. Here's some better shots.
Laid down hell, forward mounted AND layed down.
Having fun. I tried to add the name, Maico, to the picture heading and the computer refused to let me spell it Maico, it insisted on Marco. So I just deleted it.
