I've been asked to shoot a dance recital in the next 2 weeks. I've accepted, since, its my niece's dance school, I have enough ability, (hopefully) to capture the dance shots and the posed individual shots that I've been asked to get.

HOWEVER if I want to make any $$ at all, it will be based on the sales of the photos taken.

MY problem: I've been trying to come up with a system/method that will allow for me to make something for my efforts. I've been trying to set up a smugmug/photodeck/wix website so I can display the shots and generate some sales.

***BUT I can't seem to figure out how to set up the sites.

Is setting up a site like this really THAT complicated??? I don't assume to be the sharpest knife in the drawer...but wow! I feel stupid.

Any suggestions on how to set up a site, OR ANY OTHER ideas as to how I can break even make a little $$ on this little endeavor, would be GREATLY appreciated!

There was a website that was set up perfectly for what you want to do, but I can't remember the name of it. It worked much the same way that selling photos in the pro ball parks works. You have business cards and you hand them out at the venue. The cards would have the website and a special code for the event. You upload your images to the site and people can go directly there to view and purchase. The photos are supposedly blocked from people copying them off the website and the pictures are only available for a couple of weeks after the posting date. That is (supposedly, but it is good marketing) for the safety and privacy of the young athletes. Perhaps someone out there knows the name of the website.

I have Wix for my site. You can set it up to sell. I just haven't gone to the trouble. www.naturescamera.com

I've used WIX when setting up a website for a non-profit and I love it and recommend it to others. HOWEVER it doesn't include a store "out of the box", selling is a somewhat complicated add-on. You might want to research some of the other sites mentioned here that are designed for sales.

Shopify.com is good but costs, I think $15/month minimum. Using low-res proofs with a bold watermark will eliminate folks downloading for free.

I use Squarespace. Once I got used to what their products and terminology are, it was smooth sailing because they have 24 hour live chat available. I used the chat extensively and found they were most helpful and knowledgable. Every time I chatted w them, I moved the ball forward. They are inexpensive. I chose not to sell my photos online and simply use the site as a way to show my customers what I am doing. I have had no trouble selling them as a result. But Squarespace does offer the ability to sell your work on your site through them. This is my website so you can see what you think about one of their templates anyway. Their templates are cleans and modern. Www.njffotographie.com
Good luck with whatever you choose to do!

Your website is beautiful. I won't be printing myself so I would send orders in to a third party print shop.

:)

Yes, you could legitimately say I am bemused.

I want to be photographing anything from nature, to landscape including city and seascapes, portraiture, and I think I have a new found interest in dance photography. :)

You are probably bemused to say the least.
Truth is that it takes TIME to build a decent website, and frankly time isn't on your side! So do something like your flicker idea. Preparing to take the photos is a big enough concern at this stage, and lets face it you aren't going to make money from this exercise, or at best very little that wont justify time expended.
If you like the idea of a website, do your homework, take your time, trial it, amend it, and then use it. However ask and answer the question - 'what do I need a website for?' - before you invest a lot of time.
And so I asked - what do you want to be photographing after dealing with this show?

One thing you should do is put a distinct copyright watermark across the images so folks do not download without paying. Then maybe they contact you and you arrange payment and sending joegs by e- mail.

If I were going to sell for just a few times, I would set up on Shutterfly or Smugmug. You can give folks a password to look at the folders they need to or give them links and they can pick and choose which to buy in what size and order. Or ask them to pick and email you their choices and then you print.
Setting up a website is not for sissies..... I have one I do not keep up with because it was not built properly to begin with (custom) and is hard to access and update.

Yes...what ever I end up doing, I'll certainly put low res file on any site with a pronounced watermark.

Wix is great if you are setting up a site from scratch. However I am not sure you have the time for that it would involve setting payment systems. Look at Zenfolio, Smugmug or Shutterfly they all have platforms built in to allow you to sell your photos. At this point there is no need to reinvent the wheel. Later on you can set up your own website and the use what ever site you set up now to be the back end. Good Luck

Check out "GoDaddy"

I believe you'll be able to sell there too.

The two biggies with a good web site is getting the help you need to change anything you want or need to, and also the site will cost you money per month.

I think these guys are reasonable.
