Best Buy has three cameras on sale:
1) Canon EOS Rebel TS 2 Lens Kit
Includes camera with 18-55mm lens, 75-300mm lens with the camera plus camera bag PRICE $749.99
2) Nikon D5500 with 18-55mm VR11 lens
24-2MP; 5.0 fps; built in Wi-Fi. PRICE 849.99
3) Mirrorless Sony e6000 2 Lens kit
24.3MP; 11 fps; Built in Wi-Fi. Includes camera with 16-50 mm lens and 55-210 mm lens

I really can't afford anything that costs more than $1000 and I know absolutely nothing about buying a camera.

I would really appreciate your advice!

I agree with the Mt Shooter's recommendations. You missed just by one week at Best Buy, the opportunity to buy online, the Nikon D3300, 24 megapixels, with kit lenses 18-55mm and a telephoto lens, 55-200mm, including a travel bag for $500.00. It is available now for $600.00. That is still a bargain to me. You did not want to spend more than $1000.00

Perhaps it would be worth considering ease of sharing and your use of social media. Some cameras make this easier than others.

Well I'm a Canon person so I'd suggest Canon, however I'd check B&H or another good camera retailer. Also if possible you should get to hold the camera in your hands before you decide, the feel is important. For that much of a budget your should be able to get a Rebel T6i, every character in the name is important to determining which model your getting, the 'i' is usually on the better model ex T4 and T4i, the 'i' model was a good step better. compare carefully, I happen to have a T1i and T4i , if I could justify another I'd get a Canon again. After you decide on a model you might want to check Canon USA for refurbs if your budget is tighter than you mention, Bob.

PS I'm attaching the B&HY link for T6i, Bob.

I would go with the Canon. The system allows you to use any EF lens ever made on your camera with 100%compatibility and no restrictions. So as you progress and find a good deal on a lens it will work if it is not broken. Yes there is one thing that if you get a FF EOS, very expensive, the EFs lenses will not mount. But likely you will have your APSC always with you so that will not matter. So that is my recommendation for which. But all you are considering are good. I would go Nikon as my second choice. You just have to keep a score card as to what lens works with what camera. A bit confusing.

Hey there, in regards to buying your camera at Best Buy, don't !! Go to Cameta Camera's web site and you can buy a Cannon Bundle Pack for under $550.00. You'll get your T5I and 75-300 Zoom plus everything else you'll want to get started. Bought a lot of things from them and never been sorry. Also really great Tech. Support and advise. Save your money and be like the rest of us and spend it on more stuff. Best of luck and 'Happy Snapping'. Island Dave

Best Buy prices seem to competitive and they also have a policy price match thing. Handling the camera may be important in this situation.

I did see an offer on a package that I recommended earlier in this thread at $200 less than Amazon, B&H, Best Buy, and so on, but it looked too good to be true, so I decided not to post the link. There's a caveat emptor thing to consider...

Welcome to UHH. I wish I'd have done what you are doing; researching first. There are important decisions to make early on. One of the first is picking an brand. From my reading and countless YouTube videos, may folks think Nikon makes better sensors, (made by Sony) and so offer better image quality than Nikon and others say rubbish to that. I learned that either way you go, and if you do start to get into it, you will want to start amassing lenses. Then you learn that lenses aren't always easily interchangeable between manufacturers so you'll tend to stay with the brand you start with and stick with their lenses, making that original choice of brand kind of crucial. Most people would say Canon has the most comprehensive selection of and the highest quality lenses and this too is hotly debated.

I bought a Rebel T5i kit that included two lenses, a bag, strap, tripod and lots of other junk at Costco as an impulse buy. I don't use any of the stuff that came with kit anymore including the lenses. I wish I had done all my YouTube research before buying. So that is what I would say to you, watch some videos:

Canon or Nikon or Sony or somebody else?
What lenses?
Should I get a camera body only and then pick up my lenses as a pace I can afford?
See what folks are saying and make up your own mind for what works for you. I would suggest YouTube presenters:
Snapchick
Matt Granger
Tony Northrup
Improve Photography
B & H
Adorama
Phlearn
Photorec Toby
Digital RevTV for some informative down to earth laughs

Make good decisions early. I wish I did.
Good luck!

If there is a camera store in or about the area where you live, I would suggest you visit it. Handle the cameras to feel how they feel in your hands and how the various controls work. Don't be afraid to ask questions. Personally, I am a Canon person. Just feel that their cameras are more user friendly. With your budget, may I suggest the Canon Rebel T5i or T6i. With the 18-55 IS kit lens, the cost would be about $750(T6i). About a $100 more with the 18-135IS kit lens. Check out Adorama or B&H Photo. Shipping is free and NO TAX. You may want to check with Canon USA about their refurbish cameras. Good luck what ever you decide.

Every single one of those cameras is great! They all will do exactly what you want and more. My suggestion is go to the store pick them up feel them. See how they feel in your hands. The one that feels the best most likely will be the best one for you. I know that may sound crazy but cameras in general are so well made today and can do so much at the entry level you could go crazy trying to decide from many wich one is the right one. Ergonomics will play an important part in the decision. As a Nikon shooter I can tell you that D5500 will do just about anything their most expensive cameras can do the only difference really is build materials sensor size and ergonomics but the D5500 will give you the same image quality. Just my 2 cents good luck

Lady Tiger - have you got this far....?
More confused than ever?

Photography starts with 'I want to do this' and ends up with 'how do you do that'. The answer to the first is 'any camera' and the answer to the latter is 'how much money have you got'.

Most people do not stay with their first choice of camera, However many keep it to use as a spare or to leave in the car or use on the beach so the sand doesn't spoil their 'better camera'. So start cheap, with the easiest one you can use.

Photography is all about seeing the small picture within what your eyes are looking at. Looking at a new baby you notice how tiny their fingers are. That is the memory you hold for a while - till the next baby suprises you with how small their fingers are. With photography you learn to look for what is interesting and unique (ish)in what you see. You also have to be there....with a camera! You cannot buy this...No camera decides what to take on its own.

Nearly every new thing that you want to do with a camera or your pictures comes with an added cost or some practice or both. There are 'get arounds' and plenty of advice is available. But it would be rare indeed to buy 'the wrong camera'.

Poking the buttons on a camera will not break it - it just may not give you the best results. You will learn how and what to press However the more choices available also means the more disappointed and frustrated you may get in the beginning. But then if it hasn't got the buttons and things you will learn to want, you will be buying a new one.

As many people have said here....think where you want to be with your camera, how much extra 'stuff' you want to carry as well, and how wide an experience you want to explore. Thinking costs nothing....and will save you money.

It isn't as hard a thing to do as some people will state. Kids do it with their phones all day long. It is a learned skill to get it right though.

All you need is a camera.

Have fun (that's the main thing)

Why? If best buy is local, and has the exact same package at the exact same price? I know the other guys are good, but this may involve a hands on experience which can be harder with the other guys unless you are in NYC...

If Lady Tiger is near any hedgehog member/s, might be a good chance to get together and show her what you use and let her try it.
