I have a 750 and think the 1.4 is outstanding. Great in low light (and all other light too)Best around even if the others are OK

Useful comment.

Even the 55mm micro Nikkor variants, which focus to infinity, gave way to a versatile 60mm.

The newest 58mm has a new DoF capability: Sato, Haruo and Koichi Ohshita (2016) “Nikkor Future Vision: Lens Design Concepts,” http://nikkor.com/technology/02.html

When you lay your money down remember a 50 isn't long enough to be useful, nor is it wide enough to be interesting--I probably have six of them--but very rarely use them--I do have a project planned for the 1.2 coming up

I've got any number of 50mm lenses. Most are older MF models with apertures from F2 on down to F1.4 but I also have older AF 50mm lenses in F1.8 & F1.4 versions. Only paid $35 for my older AF 50mm F1.4 from someone here on the Hog who complained about CA. I told him how to avoid & correct it, but he was adamant on replacing it with a newer lens & offered it to me for that price...That said, I seldom use 50mm focal length.

If cost is not a factor then Nikon.. Just make sure of the place it was made. Some are NOT from Japan ....

I am a Nikon d750 user and would like some advice on purchasing a 50mm lens. I would like to be in the f1.4 range. I have the Nikon 50mm f1.8d but prefer to use it on one of my film cameras. My limited research tells me there are three reasonably priced choices out there: Nikon classic f1.4G, Sigma f1.8 art and Tamron f1.8. Anyone have experience with these lenses? I would appreciate any advice and/or recommendations.

Per the god on high,to many here, dxo mark the Nikon G rates a 36 score, the Sigma rates a 44 score and Zeis Otus rates a 50 score. It appears that the Sigma is far superior by a large factor to the Nikon and is closer to the Zeis Otus at a score of 50.
Looks like for the money a Sigma is your best bet.

Shame the DXO scores don't equate to real world shooting.

Add to that the Sigma is less than 1/3 the price of the Zeiss PLUS it has AF, and you have a great lens.

DXO use bench tests for their testing and the average shooter will seldom, if ever, get the same results. Maybe if the have the combo on a tripod with the mirror locked up, but few will do that. Thus, the differences will not be as readily apparent as DXO results show. I think the average shooter can expect no more than 40 lpmm tops handheld without VR. Thus reardless of how good a lens may be, it won't be any better than the person using it.

What an amazing concept! I thought from what I read here that DXO Mark trumps all skill.

Go with the Nikon. I have that lens and enjoy the great results I get.
