I know we all have our favorite lenses but I am considering buying a Sigma 18-300 lens for my d 7100.I have a Nikon 55-300 & it's ok but I am wondering if any of you have this 18-300 Sigma & would it benefit me to purchase this even if I have the 55-300? I have read all the specs & it sounds like what I am looking for.I would appreciate any help you can offer concerning the sigma lens.

FWIW - I do not own that particular lens, however....

I am assuming that it is the f/3.5-6.3 version, which is really not any faster a lens than the 55-300.

BUT it has the range from 18 to 300 in a single lens, making it easier to take along with no need to swap lenses for telephoto or wide.

And it is also a MACRO lens, which counts for something !

You may find an interest in macro shooting at some point and with that lens you would have a good start.

I have several Sigma Lenses and perform well on my D7100.

I have had the Sigma 18-250 lens on a Sony SLT-A65V camera for about two years now and am totally happy with it. I almost never change to another lens. If buying now, I would, of course, buy the Sigma 18-300.

It's best to start a new thread rather than add your question to an existing thread.

I have both a 55-300 VR and a Sigma 18-300. The 55-300 is marginally sharper at 300mm, but there isn't a significant difference in an 8x10 print. If you want an all-in-one lens the Sigma 18-300 is a good choice. It is a little heavy at 20 ounces.

The SIgma 18 - 300 is what I carry whenever I am out hiking and do not want to have to deal with changing in the field. Great images, easy to use.

It is not truly a macro lens, in fact it does not come close. The designation that many manufactures put on their zoom lenses is a misnomer, it means that they focus a little closer than some other lenses but they are only capable of "close up" photography not macro photography.
