While reading up on BBF, I ran across a few statements about VR not working while using BBF. I have a Nikon D5500. Any comments?
Thanks.
Focus and VR are two different things. Check you owners manual to see what activated them. You'll get better info than 'running across statements' from people who may or may not know what they are talking about. That includes me.

The back button does focus only--it has nothing to do with VR. VR is activated when you press the shutter button halfway. :D
I use BBF and when I look at the meta-data, I see that VR is ON, even if I am not pressing the BBF button when pressing the shutter.
Thus the statement above about VR being activated when the shutter button is press has been confirmed on my Nikon cameras (D7100 and D750).
I highly recommend BBF, works great for me.

Like you, I also use BBF on my D750 & D7100--I wouldn't use any other system. :D
If you have a lens with VR and you can turn it on or off, when on, it works, PERIOD. Back Button Focus only handles the focus and is the best thing next to peanut butter and jelly!

My understanding is that on "newer" Nikon models, VR can also be activated when BBF is used (may have to use custom settings?).
Older models such as my D300 can only activate VR with 1/2 press.

Interesting question. Does IS work with BBF with my Canon 7d, or is 1/2 shutter press manditory? I have 1/2 press off
Unless I am missing something, in order to fully press my shutter button to take a photo, the button has to go past (and activate) the 1/2 button setting. I have not figured out how to get a full press of the shutter button without having the button pass through the 1/2 button press.
So with my camera, the BBF is used for focus, and as long as the VR it turned on, because I have to pass through the 1/2 button press to get a full button press (required to take the photo), the VR is used.

Correct, it does work using BBF, on some of the newer models. It works on my D800 & D810.

What you say is right.
btw, what you say about the bbf is likely right too.

Well... almost. There is a big fly in the ointment!
VR does not work instantly. If it is enabled and not allowed to stabilize, it "works", but the results are not even as good as if it were turned off. If it is allowed to take a second or two to adjust itself, then and only then is it significantly better.
Even that isn't always right. If the camera has no vibration that VR can adjust to (mounted on a tripod), it doesn't work well. And it cannot adjust if the shutter speed is faster than about 1/500.
My own policy is to turn VR off unless I see a low light situation where it will specifically be helpful, and when I can take a second or two for each shot as VR is allowed to stabilize.

That's how it works on my D810 too.
Yup, on newer Nikons it will turn on when you press your button for BBAF, on older models you have to give a half press on the shutter release.
Yes, but VR takes a moment to stabilize. If you press the shutter button to fast you could get blur.
