I have a slightly different take on oil and coal: both are tremendously valuable as raw materials for plastics, building materials, chemicals, medicines, clothing, etc, etc. They are far too valuable to just burn! So I favor looking for other sources of energy such as nuclear. Perhaps solar and wind can be valuable in regions where they are plentiful; but a backup will still be needed when there is darkness or no wind, and again, nuclear seems like a reliable source as backup.

If hydrocarbons are replaced with batteries does that mean we will have battery powered portable generators for producing electricity for building sites and campers?

Exactly! However, if battery technology continues to improve quickly, that would be the way to go.

I'm just a country boy , The few here who bought ecectric cars were happy, but you should know the Fed , Gov never gives, without a plan. So more & more states, are now charging or taxing by the mile, so if you drive a hemi, or an electric you pay the same.If anyone will do a little study on agenda 21 you will see the endgame ,Who would have thought two strokers would be outlawed in so many places, being always about money, a bike, boat engine has nearly doubled in price, over severl years, before you know it, you will have to trailor your muscle car , to any event, and pay for driving it. again back to money. It is not true , that no one saw the oil price plummet coming. The 1% always knows, you know the ones who control the price of everything you purshace. It is no conspiracy theory, The Hollywood actors do photo shoots, driving around in their smart cars, for show. Then they board their private jets and fly away polluting all the way. Turn off the telly, read, educate yourself.

Dirt,

Decent link ..... I am looking up oil usage to see how much this will affect it.

Dirt,

This should add some color....so it looks like about 15-17% of oil in the U.S. Is used for cars?

I think the electric car issue won't have a near term effect on oil usage (See charts, below). Hopefully, over time the tech used (especially Musk's batteries) will be able to be expanded to the electrical grid, high-torque transportation, etc., but it certainly seems like it's more like decades than years away.
