I was no where near the top of my English class, however, I am, and always have been since 1st grade, an avid reader. The number of spelling mistakes I've found in books in the past 20 years has been astounding. I don't know how much time they give a proofreader to go through galley proofs, but apparently it isn't long enough, or to meet press time, they just don't want to bother changing one misspelled word.
