I must be reading this backwards. It appears you are saying that a yet to be released, 24mp DX camera will have better looking, less noisy photos than a 36mp FX camera. Lenses being the same?

Well who knows, but the pixel density of the sensors being essentially the same (larger sensor having more pixels), and the D500 a generation newer, it is possible that that it will have less noise than the D810

Yes, because "newer technology" has made the 810 "obsolete", and the 500 "incredible".
One can read it here.

If you can afford it, buy the best.. Then take a year or two to learn how it works and how to get the most out of the camera.. In all seriousness without experience, buying bigger and better will not get you better pictures. Maybe buy midrange camera, learn all about photography, buy taking pictures, then choose the camera and lens of your choice. A lot can change in the next few years it takes to learn photography...

The D810 has a Signal to Noise Ratio (Dynamic Range) graph that is just barely less than an ideal APS-C sensor is capable of. The chances that a D500 has a perfect sensor are zero.

Trust that the D500 is a very nice camera, but it cannot possibly have less noise than the D810.

Here is a chart, showing the D810 and the D7200, along with graphs for both an Ideal APS-C sensor and an Ideal FX sensor

http://www.photonstophotos.net/Charts/PDR.htm#Ideal%20DX,Ideal%20FX,Nikon%20D7200,Nikon%20D810

Click on the D800 in the listed cameras on the right side. It is a little better than the D810, and actually above the best that any APS-C sensor will ever be able to do. Consider that the D5 and whatever model replaces the D810 later this year will be even closer to the Ideal FX graph than are the D800 and D810. The D500 cannot possibly be even as good as the D810 though...

Thanks for the chart! My takeaway is that the D4s and its 16mp out performs the D810 at about 400 ISO. And that I have a pretty good camera in my D7200. :-)

Exactly! But the opposite side of the coin is that the D4s has the lowest resolution, the D810 is better, and the D7200 is actually the best!

Smaller pixels for more resolution but more noise too.
