Been a long Winter, and so tired of being sick & tired. Another heart attack arising from another aneurysm going on. Being watched, but currently no new surgeries planned. Lots of extra time on my hands tho, as not getting out much. Access to a new Mac desktop now, and not knowing anything about Macs, needing a good all-around photo editor. Thinking PhotoShop is now with the Cloud/monthly service, and looking for a single program/flat fee. Suggestions? Thanks.

I don't own a Mac, but if I did I would purchase the software Affinity for Mac only. I was upset it was only available for Macs :(.

I've tried most of em, but stick with Adobe CC (Lightroom & Photoshop for $9.99 a month, painless) as my basic. I don't use the built in mac program at all.

I use a couple of plug in suites also - mainly Nik and MacPhun which interact very nicely with the CC programs.

Photoshop Elements is a cheaper flat fee program than Lightroom. Photoshop Elements comes with Organizer that has a lot of the database functions of Lightroom. Photoshop Elements comes with Adobe Camera Raw that has almost all of the slider type adjustments in Lightroom. Photoshop Elements has nearly all of the tools for layers, masks and pixel level control.

If you want to learn Photoshop Elements quickly and efficently take the course at Lynda.com from Jan Kabilli. She is excellent. (You may be able to access it free through your local library's online services)

Try DxO for a flat fee. It doesn't organise your pics but it has presets making editing easy or as complex as you want and no layers to worry about as in Photoshop.

Affinity Photo from the App Store. $49.95 one time and it does everything Photoshop does.

Hey Busted Shutter,

Sorry to hear you have been ill. Hope you get better soon and get yourself out of the doldrums.

I have been a Mac user for years. I have tried several programs, and must admit, I like Photoshop a lot. Part of PS is ACR (Adobe Camera Raw) which is also a very quick and useful image editing program that is very useful, but you have to have PS in order to get/use ACR. I also like Lightroom for quick edits and for cataloging.

I really didn't like or think too much of Affinity, although I do have it. One that I think is pretty good is On1 Photo 10. They also have many free tutorials and they had a good deal where it could be bought for $79 or $99 (I think one of those is correct) and you got a 5 computer license with some extras. It now costs $109.99 (which is $10 off the regular price) and you get a multitude of apps all included, or, you can get a free trial at http://www.on1.com/apps/on1photo10/. I prefer it over Affinity.

Actually, another software image editing program name is MacPhun, and their programs are inexpensive and also do a pretty good job, but I think On1 Photo 10 would be a good choice if you don't go with Photoshop or Elements.

Download the Free Trial of On1 Photo 10 and see what you think. It would give you something to play around with for a while - maybe 30 days, possibly.

Good luck and wish you the best.

Best Regards,
Tom

The one problem with DXO is it doesn't do localized editing.

Hi good luck with your recovery, I had one about 4yrs ago, so know what you are going through, I'm now fine.
On my iMac I use Lightroom which is very good, also photoshop Elements and onone software, all our very good, probably Lightroom is a bit daunting to get your head around but once mastered is excellent.
