It seems to work for you, but I like my camera directly above, and as close as possible to, the apex of my tripod ( which doesn't have a centre post). So I use 'L' brackets and robust ball heads to keep the centre of gravity of my camera directly above the tripod.

Have you had any issues with ordering from China? I've been hesitant to try that option, maybe for fear of difficulty in returning items...I did find an inexpensive off-brand L-bracket for D7100 on ebay, works well.

I have ordered through EBay/PayPal and found that returns were very easy. Minimal issues.

I agree with keeping the weight centered - for LARGE lenses - but with 100mm macro - not so much !

I have and use center post because I shoot birds and planes and sometimes need the height for other reasons ......

Well, I applaud you for your DIY projects, and thank you for sharing.

For some, I think it may be generational, or maybe even just something about where you were raised, but I usually attempt to figure out how to fix a problem I'm having, before just running out and spending a lot of cash.

I made my own version of a flash bender, before they ever hit the market. Had experimented with using translucent Tupperware as a flash modifier before I ever heart of Gary Fong, etc.

Wait, I just thought of something... I should be rich by now

Oh well, please don't stop sharing your ideas. There will always be naysayers out there, but there are also a lot of us who appreciate like minded tinkerers.
