I have been using a Sony a77...for a couple of weeks now an I seriously love this camera! I bought this camera despite all the negative criticisms from Canon and Nikon users (and some Sony users as well). I have nothing but good things to say about this beauty with it's high performance "kit" lens! If i need to shoot in low light i'll just break out my Nikon d700 with the 24-70 2.8...problem solved...i basically bought the Sony for shooting fast outside...it certainly handles that well...anyway, are there any photographers around the San Marcos , Texas area with one of these? It would be cool to have a group of fellow photography enthusiasts getting together to compare notes and to engage in some positive critique. If you'd care to please visit my site...bobchag@smugmug.com I enjoy reading all the comments on this site...there are some knowledgeable people hanging out here!

Why do you feel the need to use a different camera for low light conditions?

FYI...The Sony A99 is in the works. Sony is busy getting Nikon D800 parts out, but when that settles down...expect a 36.9 MP out probably later this summer.

I am happy with my new Sony but I haven't had a chance to try it under low light conditions (if you've read all the reviews, they mention trouble in low light...without flash) ...I have a wedding to do at the end of the month and I will certainly put it to the test then, but if it doesn't perform the way I need it to, I know my Nikon will work superbly!

I found out about the a99 before I bought the a77...I weighed the options and decided that 24 megapixel was plenty, and full frame 36 megapixel would certainly be overkill for my use...not to mention the amount if info going into my computers! I felt it was way too much, after all, I don't print billboards. I have a full frame Nikon d700, 12 megapixel, and I dare say it outshot the Sony this weekend...(although the 24-70 2.8 Nikon lens gave it a big advantage). All in all, I love my Sony and the new Sony a99 will have to wait a few tears...unless I get super busy and start making crazy money! I have some HDR shots taken with both cameras that I will post when I get home tonight...please check then and tell me which you like best (if any).

I have been trying to find one of those, but as far as I can tell San Francisco got 2 and they sold in an hour and no idea when any new A77s will be in. Where did you find yours?

You can buy a Sony a77 or any other Sony camera directly from through their websight. From what I have found you can get it for the same price as most camera stores are selling them for.

I am looking at upgrading my sony a300--considered the SLT's, but I'm worried about the performance in low light, considering I'm getting more into weddings...those receptions are pretty low light! So, I'm leaning toward an a580 (if I can find one in my price range!)---or maybe a 700 or 900....anyone have any recommendations? Thanks!

Most those reviews are by Nikon and Canon fans, they seldom give Sony great reviews. Your best bet is to find someone who owns and A77 and ask them. I have the A55 and it does superb work in the dark so I can't imagine why the A77 wouldn't do better. Not only that, wouldn't it be great to see your exposure BEFORE you push the shutter button via its excellant EVF. Not to sound biased, but I don't see how the rest of you shoot without seeing what your getting first. I'd hate to have to shoot then look at the LCD. Discover its messed up and reshoot...I don't have that kind of time or patience. By the way the rumored Sony full frame A99 is still getting talk of release in September.

You won't have any problems with the ELV's.

That's right tainkc, EVF's are advancing. Mine on the A55 is an earlier version but yet the pixels are so small...I can't see them. I've tried.
There is a small amount of grain in very dark settings, but that's being caused by the camera trying to push itself. In normal daylight to late evening, I don't see any grain what-so-ever. I've looked through the viewfinder of an A77 and comparied to mine...it's like I-MAX. It's much larger and brighter. As I said earlier, the EVF is telling you want the sensor is seeing through the lens and being told by your settings. If your settings aren't right...you'll see that. Its like WYSIWYG for cameras. Buy the way, my daughter lives in KC and works at Truman Medical Center. I just love visiting Kansas City and Truman Sport Complex has a couple of the most beautiful stadiums in the Nation...It's hard to believe they're both almost 40 years old. just my opinion (ha)

You live in the city of fountains (so they say). Not only that but Truman Lake is just an hours drive south. The Lake of the Ozarks is next door to Truman. But if you don't want to drive far there's Longview Lake, Lake Jacomo, Lake Winnebago (where you can take your Winnebago), Clinton Lake in Lawrence KS, you've got the Missouri River going right through the city, Hillsdale Lake in Kansas....your surrounded by lakes and reservoirs. But if it's oceans your looking for, I can understand.
