If you're ok with changing brands, the Nikon FM series is hard to beat. You'll have no choice but to shoot 'manual'. It is reliable machine with a great reputation.
The FM with lens can be found in the neighborhood of $150.00

The F100 is a superb camera and can be found for ridiculously low prices. I love mine. Ken Rockwell still calls it the second best film camera ever behind the F6. Until the F6 came out he called the F100 the best.

I don't know about Canon, Nikon kept improving its film cameras long after the digital revolution. Here are the best film cameras near the end of the film era: 1) F6 2) F100 3) N80, and 4) FM3A. You could find 2 and 3 very easily and pay very little but 1 and 4 are still rather expensive. Enjoy!

Pentax K1000
All manual no frills and built like a tank. An awesome camera.

Minolta MDX or MD5 or X700
Another set of great manual cameras.

Minolta SRT-101 or 102
Same same.

Can't go wrong with any of them and they are a bargain

I just have the urge to get a 35mm film camera to do some practicing with. As the weather warms up I want to get out and do some landscape photography using a good camera that will require me to pause, think, compose, focus and shoot.
Any suggestions as to what would be a good purchase for me now? My last 35mm was a Canon AE1 program.
Feel comfortable using that again but just wondering what other options some of you may recommend based on your recent experience.
Thanks

Here is my .02- Go on E-Bay and look for a used Canon F-1. Can be found for under $300. Fully manual. NoAuto anything. One of the best 35mm ever made. Built like a tank. Do you still have any FD lenses ?

I still use my N70 and my dad's N8008 but I am thinking about buying a FE-2 that I saw on EBay for $100.

The FE2 was/is a great little camera. I had two and loved them - until I started getting out-of-focus photos of the grandkids (my eyes got just as old as I did). I replaced them with a Nikon N8008s, which is a great camera, too, but much larger and heavier than the FE2.

I've got an old Minolta (forget which model) with an AF 35-70 and 70-210 (beercan model) packed away in a nice hard case. It was my father in-laws' camera that he gave me a few years ago. I had thought about getting a cheap A-Mount Sony camera to use the lenses with, but never found one that meets my specs and price. If interested, PM me and we can talk details.

Any camera with match needle metering and NO auto exposure or auto focusing will do.

Ditto the 8008.
I bought a roll of Ektar 100, with the intent of duplicating the format used for the "last roll of Kodachrome", except just locally.
Focus, acquire settings from my D7200 transfer to my 8008 compose and shoot.

If you were happy with your AE-1P get another one. My last 35mm SLR was a Nikon N80 which I loved. I had an AE-1P and I liked it, but the N80 was my favorite 35mm SLR.

Isn't the N80 similar to my N8008?

Going medium format would certainly be a good choice, but they're still a bit pricier than 35's. You might look at the Elan series from Canon. They're light-weight and have some electronic aids. EF lenses will work on them. If you can find one with eye-controlled focusing, that would be a real plus.

No connection, the N8008 was released in 1988 but the N80 came out in 1998, shortly after the F100 and like it has the same AF area modes and the same beautiful construction.
