This talk of cookies has made me decide to go in and bake a few dozen. Warm oven and warm cookies - perfect for a cold day.

I never even heard of the Hydrox cookie. It sounds more like a bleach name to me.

Hydrox actually came first, it was Oreos that were the imitation.

As a kid on the 50s, 60s, I always liked Hydrox better. I always thought Oreos were a pale imitation. Unfortunately, I'll bet that the "new" Hydrox will taste different than the cookies of yore and will be more like an Oreo imitation.

If it does, it will not sell because of "Brand Loyalty".

From WIKI:

Hydrox is the brand name for the creme-filled chocolate sandwich cookie manufactured by Leaf Brands. It debuted in 1908, was originally manufactured by Sunshine (later Sunshine Biscuits) and was sold for over ninety years. 1 The similar Oreo cookie, introduced later, in 1912, was inspired by the Hydrox, however the Oreo eventually exceeded it in popularity which resulted in the Hydrox coming to be perceived as a knockoff. 2 The Hydrox was largely discontinued in 1999 after Sunshine was acquired by Keebler, who would later be acquired by Kellogg's. In September 2015 the product was re-introduced by Leaf Brands. Compared to Oreos, Hydrox cookies have a tangy, less-sweet filling and a crunchier cookie that gets less soggy in milk. 3
From WIKI: br br Hydrox is the brand name for the... (show quote)

Besides the flavor of the filling, the cookie itself also tasted different, and IMHO, much better.

I worked for Sunshine Biscuits in the 1970's, when it was owned by American Brands (American Tobacco). The entire line of cookies and crackers had hundreds of items in it, and none of its brands, except CheezIt, were market leaders nationally. Hydrox had quite a different taste than Oreos, the market leader, thought by consumers to have a less "burnt" taste than Oreos. We created the "Drox" cartoon character to appeal to kids, which helped spike sales for a while. Anyone remember "Drox Sox?" Sunshine was sold, spun off, etc. until Keebler purchased it several years later, primarily (it is said) to acquire the CheezIt brand. After giving Hydrox (along with Chip-a-Roos, Vienna Fingers, Hi Ho Crackers, and Krispy Crackers) a run, only CheezIt (now with a gazillion variations) and Krispy (in some markets) survived. Glad to see Hydrox is coming back - I always like them better, but then again, I'm biased.

Cody the buffalo (bison) was made famous in the movie Dances With Wolves. There was a scene where they wanted Cody to charge at the young Indian boy. The way they got him to charge to a spot was to put out a small pile of Oreo cookies, his favorite.

He loved Oreo cookies and if someone were to give him a Hydrox cookie he would spit it out.

I was at the owners house years ago and we were in the living room talking. There were footsteps on the porch. Mike went and opened the door and in walked a very large, young bison. He walked into the living room, turned around and Mike told him to get out. I don't know how he didn't knock anything over but it was quite a sight.

I vaguely remember Sunshine Hydrox as a kid. They weren't as sweet as the Oreos so we kids preferred the Oreos. )Of course, if the 'Brand X' cookies were put out for us we didn't complain.) The name 'Hydrox' makes me think of an Australian accent for some reason now.

The new owner has worked hard to get the original taste, using better ingredients than Kellogg used when it made them for a couple of years, and having fans of the original Hydrox evaluate them.

The question is will it really taste the same as back in the day, or will they "modernize" the flavor like "New" Coke.
